You could try Castrol Syntrax...it made a difference to the quality of gearchange in my MY99...You need a part synthetic oil so that the friction between some of the gearbox components(baulk rings/syncro hubs)is sufficient to give a clean change. There have been reports in some other threads of people filling with fully synthetic and getting worse changes as a result of the oil being a bit too slippy!!
Syntrax is 75w90...
Some people swear by Silkolene Syn5...not tried that myself, but their engine oils are top bannana!!

Thanks for advice lads....I believe it has had Syntrax put in it in about Nov 2000 and then the car was stood from Dec 2000 until I bought it Apr 2001... since I have been driving it it has started to baulk when changing between 3 and 4 at higher speeds and also when changing down from 5 to 4.
I spoke to the garage and the bloke there who had run it for the last year before putting it in the show room had never had a problem but it had got the original gearbox oil in it until a month before it came of the road.....I am only guessing that it is the oil causing the problem....They are quite happy to strip it and sort it but I thought may be a change of oil to the correct type may stop the need to a strip down.
Is the Silkoline you mention a semi of fully synthetic then?
What are your thoughts on the above?
Where can I get some by the weekend?
HELP.......cheers!

A fully synthetic can make some gearboxes "grab" as its too slippy and stops the baulk rings biting properly, you should revert to the recomended Subaru stuff which is semi synthetic and specially blended. If you can't get it serviced by someone that has it you should be able to persuade a dealer to sell you 5 litres but it comes in 25 litre drums to the dealers. I put full synthetic in my box and it started to grab badly, changed back and no problem.

Thanks BOB....
Music to my ears
I will go to my local dealer and try to get some.
These other oils may be better but subaru standard stuff must be good enough if it comes from the factory with it in!
If this dont cure it then..STRIP DOWN.
Thanks for all the help lads
keep on scoobying!!
