Hello All

I have had my MY93 WRX for about 2 months now and love it to bits...

I have had a few problems with turbo hoses splitting, up-pipe started blowing, Now it is running fine with a new up-pipe and new turbo hoses..

Well I say fine...

In 1st and second gear the turbo doesnt get to 1.1 bar pressure until about 4500-4800 RPM and I get a little whoosing noise when it is pressuring up.

I have been told by Powerstation that the inlet blades are worn, Do I take it then the air is going back into turbo (reverse pressuring, hence the noise?)

In 3rd gear upwards, it hits max pressure at 3500 rpm..

The car has following mods

FMIC
HKS Dump Valve
HKS Air intake kit (powerflow kit)
HKS EVC 4 pro Boost controller and dash mounted Gauge
Uprated fuel pump in tank (new)
3" fully de-cat system with HKS rear box.

RR @ 285 BHP and somwhere about 230 torque.. this is when they told me turbo was knackered, I had hoped the up-pipe was problem.
(is that torque figure a bit low??)

It has a P1 turbo fitted, what this exactly is/means.. I don't know.. anyone know what model number this would be.. it has IHI on it but nothing on serial/model plate.

I am obviously now looking for a replacement turbo and have found a few TD05's second hand in good nick..

Is this the correct turbo for this car? was it standard for a MY93 WRX?

If not is it a better turbo than what I have?

When sould I expect to get to full boost in 1st and 2nd gear etc?

This is going to be an expensive purchase so I want to get it right 1st time!!

Any in-depth info regarding above questions will be so helpful

Cheers

Rob

What I also mean't to say!!!

All hoses, clamps etc are fitted correctly and not leaking..

Is there anything else on car that could cause above symptoms???

Does a hybrid turbo means it gets to max boost quicker and provides more boost?

As I will be running 1.1bar is a hybrid not really required?

Does a standard tubro at 1.1bar give same power as a hyrbid at 1.1 bar???

Cheers

I think P1s run the vf28 turbo mate, easy to get hold of, I recently sold a low mileage one for 250.
good luck.

I take it the VF28 is a smaller turbo than the standard fitted turbo (TD05???) Giving better bottom end, less lag, but less top end power...

Condisering the mods I have would it be better for me to get a TD05 fitted??

Would this bolt straight on in place of the IHI one or would the car of been modded to make the IHI fit. the splitter maybe (don't know what this is, just heard about it somewhere). If so, easy job to get back to standard so I can get the TD05 on???

As said before any replies would be great, in-depth as much as you like..

Cheers all

a td05 should go straight back on and will create more of a kick than the vf28, I think it is capable of a lot more power but is best when converted to front entry, time for some experts to jump in now!!!!!!!!

I'm no expert, but.... The TD05 is the right turbo for the car, and in front entry guise is very good, but this will mean you need to raise the inlet manifold on spacers, and remake your fuel lines. If you are running the standard injectors you should be able to make about 300bhp and 280-290 lb/ft with a standard TD05. If you go for bigger injectors (and a remap obviously) you should be able to get up around the 350bhp mark. Anymore than that and you will need a straight entry, and probably new headers and up-pipe. On my car (MY94 WRX) with a std TD05, 550cc injectors and FMIC I get 1 bar boost around 3000 rpm and peak torque at 4000 rpm. I run 1.25 peak and 1.2 held till redline and get 330bhp and 300 lb/ft
