Power Steering Pump
#1
Has anyone had experience of curing a leak on the power steering pump. Is it normally the o ring between reservoir and pump? Not got a major leak but the there is some fluid around.

Are sure that isn't fluid boiling out of the resevoir cap? Most Subarus do this as standard. Make sure there isn't too much fluid in the resevoir. The later cars have a bigger, finned resevoir, plus the power steering feed pipe runs a big loop across the front of the rad to aid cooling. The later resevoir and pipe can be fitted (with a little bending) to the earlier cars, and this helps but not completely cures the problem.

Jantec,
A friend has this problem of Power steering fluid wetting around the base of the reservoir. Not a running leak, just wet with fluid and dirt sticking to it.He changed the O rings below the reservoir and now no more leak and wetting.Took the mechanic under an hour to do this job.
Hope this helps.

Chiark,
Try spraying some fan belt lubricant or WD40 onto the fan belt and pulley and see if this improves or not.Mine when I do full turn either left or right, the steering pump tends to give a grunting sound and was told this is bcos of the extra load given to the pump to turn the wheels.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Guys
Have just changed the o-ring (not available for MY96 from dealers/IM so got the nearest general purpose o-ring to match from a kindly Subaru mechanic's bits box) and have put atf Dextron III in - so we will see what happens. You are right Chan - an easy job - three bolts, one pipe connection, suck out the old fluid and lift off the reservoir - fit new o-ring and put it back.
We will see if that fixes it.

Stuart: sorry to hijack this thread, but would that explain why my power steering is quite noisy? I can hear a pffaaart (well, ish, it's more of a shhhhhssssh noise) when I turn...

has anyone got a remedy for my power steering pump problem?
Whenever I go for a blast on bumpy lanes, the power steering pump makes a horrendous whining noise (even louder than the one my wife makes!-only joking). It stops after if I let the car idle for a couple of mins, then returns if I repeat the abuse to the car. I have changed pumps, run on Dextron etc, etc.
