Blue smoke on tick over?
#1
Any help with this would be great as two Subaru dealerships have told me nothing is wrong.
At approx. 11000 miles I started getting a rattle from the engine bay, I took it to a dealer. The rattle vanished on the way there after about 100 miles. I had the same thing happen over the last week, car booked in, rattle vanished day before. My car has always done some strange things, sudden lose of power when going hard around roundabouts, lack of boost in second gear. It also seems to use alot of oil. I don’t do track days, but often cruise at 120+ when abroad.
My concern is that if I am stuck in traffic for long periods i.e. 30+ minutes the exhaust smoke becomes very blue.
This seems to happen more quickly if the engine has not been running for a long durations, i.e. drive two minutes to the shops/ let the car tick over from cold. Blue smoke can appear in as little a five minutes in the situation.
MY99 PX induction kit, Full Scorpian system including downpipe.
Can anyone shed a little light

My car a my99 had a similar problem spewing blue/white thick clouds of smoke out at tickover, making the cockpit smell oily.
I took it to the garage and they diagnosed it as the turbo needed replacing. Subaru uk wouldn't replace it saying "..we have never had a turbo go and it can't be that..". So over 15 months it got 2 sets of valve seals all the gaskets in the engine were replaced etc. etc. and the problem was still there.
Eventually Subaru uk agreed on a turbo and the problem has gone!!
What a lot of pi...ng about.
If it is the same thing insist on a new turbo so you don't have to wait ages.
Hope this helps

Mr Leigh
I'm 90% certain the turbo is shot. Try starting the car, idle for a few minutes and give it a boot of the throttle, most likely you will get the fumes/smoke u mentioned. In any case blue fumes is an indication of... errr...is it metal contact?
If its past warranty period I suggest u send it for a stage 1/2 hybrid rebuild in lieu of replacement, its a better package

Mr Leigh,
Your loss of power on roundabouts could be fuel surge... this would be a problem if you were lowish on fuel at the time. If it happens again, have a look to see how much fuel you have left. Keep the car over the bottom quarter of the gauge and the problem shouldn't occur unless you are lapping roundabouts sideways.
