Question

Dear All

I wonder if anybody could answer a question for me?

When I was filling up my car with SUL the other day, a bloke filling his car up next to me got chatting (he seemed interested in Imprezas).Anyway, the conversation got onto me filling up with SUL and to cut a long story short, he told me that if I were to go back to using PUL that it will damage the knock sensor. Not having the faintest idea about these things, is he right or not? Obviously I'd like to know incase I'm caught out and need to use PUL in an emergency and I don't want to cause any damage.By the way, my car is a MY98 UK Turbo(approx 14000 mls).

Thanks in advance

Richard.

Hi Rich.

There is no way that you could damage the knock sensor, as it does not come into contact with fuel at all!

A knock sensor is a microphone that sits on top of the engine listening for the particular frequency that knock tends to occur at.

Pete,

Very true, but you've forgotten, that if you have an STi5, and use PUL, the "knock" would probably rattle the nuts off the sensor

PUL wouldn't hurt the Lambda sensor any more that SUL would. (LRP most likely would).

As I said about the Lambda sensor, "unlikely", but at least it is exposed to gasses/unburnt fuel, whereas the knock sensor, as PC pointed out, isn't!

Maybe the guy at the garage meant to say that the car may start knocking if it's used to super and you force feed it some low quality fuel. This may well be an issue if RichardP is running a japanese import, which he 'aint!

Maybe the chap was meaning it may hurt the Lambda sensor? Also unlikely, but more possible than the knock sensor!
