I have the following mods on my MY97 and it's running around 260bhp:
Full decat, K&N Induction kit, Dawes at 1.2bar (fuel cut raised to 1.3bar), Samco hoses, Forge VTA D/V. I also have an AFR Meter, Boost guage, and a Knocklink. Oh, and some decent brakes (320mm Brembo four-pots).

hmm - Full de-cat for a start - safe enough there and good bhp for your money--- Won't take you to 260 though -
For this I reckon you'll need to raise the boost via a map (Power Engineering 750 quid) or boost controller (50 quid)
However, in both cases, you'll need a boost guage and for the 'safe' part you'll need an AFR and knocklink, particularly if you go for a boost controller....
I've used my 98my for a year with de-cat with no-issues, and I've used the Dawes to lift boost (Still have Fuel Cut enabled) for a month now. [Have to say that the car has 'revealed' a couple of weak spots since raising the boost - oil leaks from both rocker gasket covers - but I think that this is a common 'fault' at 90k+ miles anyhow.....]
Also, have you done anything with the brakes or suspension - a set of 4 pots or better to replace the dire 2 pots on the 98 will give you lots more potential and confidence -
I'd be tempted to 1)de-cat 2)improve brakes 3) see if I need more
Obviously I did, see my web site, though I haven't got around to putting anything about the dawes on yet.....

When I put the de-cat on my MY95 uk turbo it made a big difference with performance and noise very nice indeed. Im in the process of getting a scoobyecu(not available for post 97 car) so hopefully this will take it upto the 260-270bhp not sure on figures but gonna get the engine and box out next week end to do rebuild.

I just used a Dawes Fuel-cut lifter. It's a bit tricky to setup, you have to be careful not to set the FC too high, but once setup it does the job perfectly.
