Yes, for most det I see it is spikes I look for. Still any orange except at almost 8000 RPM would warrant investigation. Easiest thing to try is a quality octane booster.

I have jsut got round to fitting my knocklink from the group buy that S.B organised.
When starting the car I get a very qiuck flicker of the 2nd green and then at idle just a dim 1st green. If I Rev the car reasonable hard at idle i can get both the greens. If i floor it in first I can get the amber ones lite as well. This seems to be to much activity compared to other people.
The sensitivity is at max as per everyone else's and the sensor is mounted on top of a bracket near the intercooler. I used a m8 40mm bolt.
Is it simply a case of turning down the sensitivity, moving the sensor, what torque seting should the sensor be tightened to

Try moving the sensor to underneath the Intercooler, and onto the block itself, it could be noise from the IC bracket
If you do a search there a quite a few pics of where most people put theirs

Sorry wasn't very clear, The sensor is on the block. There is a m8 bolt which goes in the block and it holds a rubber pipe via a bracket. I have used a longer bolt and put the sensor there.
I have used the same location as mentioned on here

Ah right, then its in the right place
On mine I get the greens lighting up on starting the engine (but this is just noise) and only happens on the first crank of the engine (before it fires up)
I do get some activity around 4.5k in 4th on full boost, but other than that, quiet as a mouse
What model and year is the car, and what fuel are you running, and what mods do you have ?

Its a 98 STI V4 with full decat and induction, I i rev it hard i can get a orange but only when reving ie if i keep it at a constant 4k whist stationary i have no activity but when reving I do. WOuld have thought it was pssible to get det when stationary.
I have currently got optimax in the tank. May go for a quick spin to see what it is like in other gears

What happens if you floor it in 4th?
I would be more concerned if i got a yellow or red in 4th than 1st.
It maybe picking up more in the way of general engine noise in 1st especialy if booting it.
The turbo will produce more boost in the higher gears than the bottom one, hence you will more likely have det in high gears. Likewise, if opening the throttle at standstill creates the lights this will be engine noise rather than det.
I dont reckon youl get det without actualy driving it.

Right I am back and not happy.
1. in 4th if i floor it the lights raise steadily. about 4 i get a green 4.5 two geens 6 ish orange and 6.5 two oranges and then the red about 6.8.
If i hold it at aconstant 4.5 i get a continious 1 green and if you are cruising at say 4k and then floor it all the lights lig for 2 secs and then reads 1 and moves up.
Ihave had the car over a year and done 20k with no probs and now i have the knocklink I think my car is about to blow

The pattern on the knocklink that indicates det is a sudden spike climbing the tree beyond the background level of noise and then (hopefully) dropping down again. A smooth increase in noise level as you go up the revs is not det, just background noise. However, through det cans you can hear detonation sounds at say 4000 RPM that are only little spikes - say two greens.
Put in a load of NF octane booster and see if it shuts up.
Clearly a lot of cars take a bit of det for quite a long time, the debate is on how much det is damaging. You should be able to get a quieter knocklink with a load of octane booster though, and invariably you need it running an import, especially with exhaust and induction.

Just been out and in fith it is just the same as in 4th, smooth increase up to 7k and little flash of rsd.
John - Are you saying that as it is a smooth increase there isn't any major casue for concern. Ie if i floored it and it jumped from green to amber suddenly and dropped back down then that would actually be det and not background noise.
I am having a link ecu, and uprated pump, and fmic fitted in a couple of weeks ao will be able to see if the ecu is actually hearing det.

I agree with Dr Banks, I recently ran on optimax alone and my check engine light on my Power FC was falshing like mad, indicating knock, 50 mls of NF race added to next fill up and no check engine light, now on fourth round of NF still no light, I would go as far to say if I went back to Optimax only then the disco would start again.
