You would be better off not using a flushing agent. Just drain the old oil straight out.

If the stuff that's in there at the moment is minging, instead of putting decent oil straight in, get some cheap 10w/40 mineral from your local B&Q, put that in and drive around slowly for a day or two. Then drop that stuff out and put the decent oil in.

You can get filters from Halfords, but seeing as you've got to visit the dealer for the sump plug washer anyway, you may as well get a genuine Subaru one.

Only other thing worth adding is to make sure you know the "right" way to change the oil on these cars.

Bloody hell , thank god i didnt do the oil change like i used to do my MG turbo, do you really have to go through the chew of disconnecting the crank sensor or spark pluge , as the spark plugs are a job in themselves to do arnt they, er and were exactly is the crank sensor ,as im a bit of a newbie ?

Spark plugs aren't essential, justs helps in turning the engine to release the pressure in the bore

Dav, as Gedi says, removing the spark plugs is nice, as it takes pretty much all the pressure off the bearings, but isn't essential. Taking the crank sensor off will get you most of the way there. Crank sensor location is covered in that "FAQ" thread - look for a post from me about half way down the page.

The way I look at it though, if I'm going to be changing the oil every 3K miles or so, that's also a convenient interval for giving the underbonnet area a good check over and clean.

Looking at it that way, I can live with taking the washer bottle, battery and airbox out. Also, having a look at the plugs on this regular a basis can give advance warning of more serious problems down the line - such as high cylinder temps/det, oil use, etc. etc. etc.

By the way, would anyone be interested in a pictorial "how to" page dealing with all this? Will be doing mine over the next couple of weeks so if someone thinks it'll help I'll get some photos and edit them into the FAQ thread...

Do I really have to go to a Subaru main dealer for the sump plug washer? Surely Halfords do anything that's an equivalent?

Rich.

great idea.
Would be even better if Simon would make a 'how to' section for things like this. The 'how to' posts could be submitted via a simple HTML form and then put up once approved (users can't make new posts so people can't put any old nonsense in there). Then we could link people into there instead of having the same disscussion year after year.
