Question

Hi folks,

Sorry, but a quick question, My gerbox oli is on MIN, so I have gone out and grabbed some 75/90 syntrax and a funnel

Does anyone know how much oil needs to be put in to get from MIN to MAX without constantly checking?

STI2, normal gearbox.

Cheers,

Nick

Question

OK, thanks so far folks, but another question.

I just went to do it and thought how on earth could I? I could have sworn that the last time I had a gearbox replaced, I watched them fill it up through the gearbox dipstick pipe, which took an age. The funnels that I have don't go anywhere near that far down. How do you guys do it?

Cheers,

Nick

halfords sell funnels with a 'long end' (oo-err!) that you can bend to fit in the dipstick hole whilst the funnel is still above intercooler height, hope that makes sense

2nd go at explaining:- buy the biggest orange funnel you can find in halfords and you`ll be able to work the rest out

Hehe, I think I noticed them when I bought the little multi funnel kit there.

Thanks again,

Nick

Question

LOL, I put a touch over 500ml in and the dipstick still looks exactly the same! Not that it is particularly easy to see where the level is.......

****, what to do now. Do I just pour the rest of the bottle in? What happens if you have too much gearbox oil? Anything bad or can it easily get rid of it?

Cheers guys,

Nick

Was told by a mechanic at a scoob dealership that overfilling gearbox isn`t as bad as overfilling engine oil, but i still wouldn`t go too far. Make sure the car on level ground, give the dipstick a good clean and whap it back in and leave it for an hour while you have your tea or something. If there`s still nowt on the dip stick bung a few hundred ml`s in and leave it again for a while.
Try and put your dip stick back in whilst trying NOT to let it touch the sides of the 'spout' (i know its hard), coz if it get s a film of oil on it on the way in you won`t be able to tell how high the level is sometimes.

God i can`t `alf talk sh*te

When I filled my gearbox, I cut a two foot length of garden hose off, jammed that on the dipstick hole on the gbox, then put a funnel in the other end. Works a treat

Dela, can't believe someone else did the same as I have for ages, I have a funnel with the hose always connected because I have a couple of Subaru's.

Garden hose works a treat!!!

How do you guys do it?
The easiest way is with the intercooler off, allowing you much easier access and the ability to use a "normal" funnel. So either combine with some other maintenance, or use it as an excuse to spruce your I/C up.

A few minutes spent washing the dead insects and crud out of your I/C, then straightening the fins (while the missus patiently fills the box of course! ) will give you a noticeable (no joke) drop in charge temps, so you get a bit more power and a safer running engine into the bargain!
