RE-MAP to Unleaded ???
#1
I have a 1999 "V" WRX Import - I been advised to only run it on optimax, after melting the first engine.....
Can I get The ECU Re-mapped to run on Un-Leaded ???
Whats the Likely cost ???
AND Whats the downside? Less Power???
If anyone has already done this please comment...

Jay, you cant remap the standard ECU, but you can get something like Link, ECUTek, Gems, Motec, etc. that can be mapped to your car using what ever fuel you like.
Link speak to BR Developments
ECUTek speak to Power Engineering
Gems speak to someone up north, cant think of the name
Motec speak to either BR Dev. or any Motec dealer.
I wouldnt run an import even after a remap on normal unleaded.

Your standard ECU can be remapped, but you'd need to check in advance that your tuner had or could get the ROM files for your particular ECU. Ecutek supply ROM files for the STi 5 and 6 but not the WRX with the Flash99 tuning package. You could check by reading the label on your ECU - an STi 5 is AF040 for example.
Remapping to 95 RON will slow it down if you run the same boost. I suggest you remap it to Optimax or at least 97 RON.

Just had my Gems re-mapped (by no-one up North at all) to run on Esso 97 super (as its a 40 mile round trip to Optimax from where I live) and its fine, better than the original Optimax map.

In the feature and license information, (under "help"), on EcuTek Delta Dash, it shows that the MY99 WRX has the AE490 ECU. Is it possible that Ecutek now have the ROM files since it is listed in the latest Delta Dash version?
Ditto what John says. If you remap to 95 RON fuel, you will lose a substantial amount of power. Best is to get a safe map for Optimax or 97 RON fuel and you will possibly gain even more power than you had before and it will be safe as well.
Oh and a good investment would be the purchasing of a Knocklink so as you can monitor detonation, which is the big killer of engines.
Cheers,
George.
