Unhappy

My engine throw its hand in last night, just asking what's the best way to go.
I want the reliability more than performance but I need a stronger engine of that there is no doubt, but one that isn't likely to smash the gearbox (which is an STi4 box).
The car is MY98 UK Terzo, mods include the gearbox VF24 Turbo FMIC Full Decat,Apexi Power FC ETC.
I tought of maybe an STi 4/5/6 engine or a P1 engine. I assume it would be better to do that as to rebuild the one I have with the same kind of spec as it already had, or should I build my engine with stronger parts. Again I need reliability above performance for now and don't want my new engine to fail with the set up on my car, also then, it would be nice to know the engine would be capable of handling maybe a bigger turbo and have the capability to supply the correct fuel and air.
Please help I need my car back on the road

Cool

You should speak to Matt at Roger Clark Motorsport. There's not much he doesn't know about Impreza engines......

alanjack,

sorry to hear about your engine

why have you got an STi4 box?

ive been offered one to replace my MY00 box, also with a plated rear diff.

whats does yours drive like with the STi4 box, did it go straight in or did you need other bits too?

Peccy,

I'm no expert, but I have changed my WRX box to a UK spec one. I had to have the rear diff and if I remember rightly the prop shaft to go with it. You may find you need to change these also.

God do I feel stupid
I am having an STi4 engine put in my car now, 43,000miles were on it and it is from an accident damaged car.
I was going to go for a 2.5 conversion when the depths of that project are fully realised the not to mentioned £5,000 as well, I went for the STi4 route, which I got with an uprated oil pump for £1550.

The box you had was STI 4 ratios with a uk front diff fitted. You should get your engine on Wednesday

Colin, I thought it was an STi box, with STi gears re-arranged to match the ratio's the UK box had. (still no details)
Anyway thanks for everything yet again Colin

Alan,

Re STi ratios and acceleration - I believe you are right. Though my car is a lowly WRX, it was more frantic in its acceleration with the Jap box by comparison with UK box and diff I know run with.

I am more likely to need to drop a cog now for swifter overtaking, but couple the box with an extra 1k rpm (though it is rarely used) and extra boost and this is not really a problem.

i have been in the same position as you recently and decided that it was better and cheaper to upgrade to an STi engine.

i was looking at a rebuild with forged internals e.t.c but its not cost effective when you can get an STi engine from £1500, then you got the larger injectors, TB, better turbo, pistons, heads e.t.c...

I had the STi 4 gearbox built to UK ratios and crown wheel put on suit final drive by Rally Colin. It drives exactly the same, very pleased with Rally Colin and the gearbox
Just decided though what to do. I will have to keep it under wraps for now but I will say that money wise it is by far the best option, and I will get a better more reliable car
