i have a modded uk my00 with about 280bhp/torque, with a standard clutch, if i fit a performance clutch like an AP organic, would my 0-60 time improve?

would like to know cos im doing a 0-60 challange thingy and want to be as quick as possible

Peccy,

Your times will only improve, if your current clutch is slipping.

Practice will make the biggest difference.

The other problem with a stronger clutch, is that if you're not carefull, you'll load the gear box up too much, and could break a gear, on the other hand, if you slip the clutch in for too long, you'll over heat it, and get slip, regardless of how strong it is.

The times can improve when you get a better clutch if you eliminate some slip as you feed the clutch back on the change.

If you want a better 0-60 time, I would say flat-shift. I'm not saying do it all the time, and you might suffer by changing as late as 6800rpm or so, but you will maintain at least 10psi of boost during the change if you do so, no waiting for the boost to come back in.

Flatshifting is powershifting -- that is, not lifting the throttle & not using the clutch, just yanking the gearlever from gear to gear.

If you've got a "soft" rev limiter then you can dip the clutch to smooth the change without lifting the throttle, but either way it's pretty brutal ...

well, put it this way, I've experimented and done it about half a dozen times on the 2-3rd shift on the road, and I definitely had 10psi of boost when on the limiter.

I changed at about 6800, but you have to be very precise.

I assume this is for the 0-60 challenge thing, in which case you might have to do 2-3 runs, in which case it's probably worth it.

The factory limiter isn't as harsh as I thought, there is a ignition retard element to it, and it's not just a full fuel cut, otherwise I don't think you would get the boost.

sounds brutal! never tried shifting without the clutch, didnt think it was possible - just though you got a nasty crunching noise and end up in neutral like when i forget to press clutch enough.

may give this a go, just 2 or 3 times, whats the worst that can happen? i take it the quicker you change the better?

You just don't lift the throttle. Flat(out) shifting, I don't think you could get it out of gear under full power withouth the clutch.

Edited to add you might just get away with not dipping the clutch on a dog box. But in reality you only really shift without the clutch on the downshifts under breaking.

Paulo & Peccy, it can be done without using the clutch ... but it isn't nice hearing the noises.

Never done it or heard of it being done on a Scoob but a mate of mine (one of the premier car-abusers I've ever met ) used to power-shift his Opel Ascona 1.9 and his Dolly Sprint. His trick was to lift from full throttle a **tiny** fraction -- it was no more than a little twitch of his foot, he maybe went from full throttle back to three-quarter throttle then nailed it again. At the moment you lift, it unloads the drivetrain and you can ****** the gear then without the clutch.

However, the banging noise when the gear went in wasn't nice -- even on a well shagged Ascona.
