Just had an engine rebuild with Cosworth internals, and at the same time fitted equal length headers and a Turbo Dynamics roller bearing hybrid (and uprated fuel pump).

Already had a Unichip, full decat (Mongoose) and HKS induction.

Am looking to put on a front mount I/C as soon as funds allow as my MY95 WRX has a piddly intercooler which I believe may become the 'bottleneck'.

My main questions however are about the injectors which are currently standard:

Firstly, I'm aware that this will also be a bottleneck once the I/C has been sorted. What is involved in changing these to 440s for example? I dont think its something I'll try myself but in terms of time (and therefore cost) how involved a job is it?

Secondly, on a MY95 I dont know whether I have Phase 1 or 2 fuel rails and how this relates to the injectors that I would need to buy.

Anyone have any answers?
Cheers

Ben

Um, I think you might want something a little heftier than 440s

Nom - that was another point actually!

If I'm going to the trouble of fitting larger injectors, I'd like to put in something that will leave me options for more power in the future but I dont want anything that will upset running at idle/everyday reliability etc as this car will be back to a daily driver pretty soon.

So where to go next? 550s? I've heard mention of 880s too - will this cause reliability issues?

Thanks
Ben

I'm no expert on injectors here, but the ones available does depend on the phasing & that one I don't know...
The usual with injectors is to work out how much power you want/are going to get, and then calculate back to see the flow rate that you need to sustain this sort of power. The flow rate depends on the injectors & the pressure that they are driven at, but it's a pretty accurate calculation to work out the required flow.
The equation to work it out with... hmmm not sure where it is!
Someone will know the 'guideline' figures off the top of their heads, though

Thumbs up

Cheers Nom - anyone know the guideline figures/equation?

BTW, I'm not looking for any more than about 340bhp at this point

Actually, 440s will do 340!
But 550s may well be a better option at this point, as they shouldn't cause any problems & are capable of more, should you want it

440s will be cheaper and more available, and do the job if you have an uprated fuel pump, and possibly you will need a regulator if you are a just a bit short on fuel (say up to 15% extra).

Consider porting your OEM headers and using an aftermarket uppipe. In addition work on the entry to the turbo to make it straight, large and smooth.

Forgot to say, the turbo is an MD270 and I have the PE equal length headers on it.

Has anyone done a comparison between equal length headers and the ported OEM headers?

Some like some don't. Usually a bit of a trade off, depends on the turbo and the mapping how it goes.

Well the map hasn't been done yet - I pick the car up again next week to start running it in and will get it mapped after 1000 miles or so.

I've heard it running with the equal length headers and it sounds so different - I'll have to give it some time to see how I get on with that.

In the meantime, I can port the OEM headers and maybe swap them over in the near future and see how it reads on a RR with each.

So how straightforward is it to change the size of injectors? Also, on a MY95 what phase fuel rails will I be running?
Thanks
Ben

MY95 is Phase I. Some on here (David Wallis and/or Pavlo I think) have fitted Phase II rails and 550s to Phase I cars.

Question

How are the injectors identified? my MY97WRX has injectors with yellow connectors, if that means anything, I believe they are 440's.
