Is a 0-1600oF(870oC) range ok for an EGT gauge?
#1
Most EGT gauges i've seen go up to about 1100C but the autometer one (to match my boost gauge) only goes to 870C (1600F). I did initially want to put the probe in the hole left in my headers by the lambda sensor (moved to downpipe). But i believe after doing a search that the temps here may well get over 900oC. I'd like to put the probe before the turbo... so maybe i could could put it in the uppipe (which i'll hopefully be getting soon). What sort of temps are likely to be seen here (50oC difference)? Ultimately i'll be running 19psi so im not running excessive boost but im a bit worried i'd be running the gauge at it's very limit and if something did happen and the EGTs went sky high i wouldn't know cos it was at it's limit anyway .
Where would you suggest that the temps would not get over 850oC and to the people that have this gauge.... where did you put the sensor?
Cheers,
Tony.

I've got the Autometer gauge mounted exactly were you have mentioned. At a 70 - 80 mph cruise I get 1100 - 1200 F. The highest I've had it is 1450 on a warm day at Oulton Park, running 1.0 bar on a MY95 WRX with a large dose of NF. Soon to go to 1.2 bar. The way I see it is that if it hits 1600 I'm backing off

Cheers Justin,
So the highest you've seen is about 790oc on a track day. That's in the headers? You'll have to let me know what you get at 1.2 bar.... im only going to be running 1.3bar so shouldn't be far off. Spending £85 on the autometer one sounds nicer than spending over £300 on defi boost and egt or £275 on the spa dual guage. I am a tight **** .

Tone, no worries.
yep, its in the headers where the old lambda sensor used to be. I'm a tight **** too and figured that if the gauge under-reads 10% then 870 is more like 940 Since I'm not using it for mapping etc the readings don't need to be super accurate like the more expensive items available. Especially when most of the time I forget to monitor the gauges when enjoying myself on track . Knocklink in line of sight essential for me!

Just to add you get what you pay for. If, like me you forget to monitor things then with the more expensive gauges you can set a warning light to come on at a certain temp. Also the Autometer gauge starts at 600F, bit bizarre since it does'nt register for cold idle! But it does the job where it counts nonetheless.

Tony,
Scoobymania quoted £225 for an Autometre Phantom EGT gauge when I phoned them a few months back, where are you getting yours from or was I just given the wrong price

Colin.... Scoobymania's new website has the autometer egt gauge pack at £85 plus the vat. Justin... didn't you get yours from scoobymania. I thought you paid about £100 too???
Doing a bit of bodge maths, from the autometer website:
5765 - egt gauge $136.95
5244 - egt probe $61.65
5775 - afr gauge $75.70
So the egt gauge and probe is about 2.5 times the afr... from Scoobymania's website the afr is about £42.... so this makes the egt pack about £100. A bit of a funny way to do it but you get the idea.... they shouldn't be over £200 .

Yep, I paid £85 + VAT about 8 months ago from Scoobymania, I had to wait a few weeks since they had to order it in - they didn't stock black faced dials at the time.

Tony,
I've been watching this thread for a few days with interest as I'm fitting a EGT when I get my uppipe, however, I'm going about it slightly differently.
1. Stainless steel sheath Type-K thermocouple (good for -200 -> +1100C) (~£15)
2. Analogue Devices AD595 thermocouple amp with built in CJC (~£15)
3. A little voltage division and straight into one of the spare ADCs on my Scoobymonitor for display and logging.
