I've been thinking about this option. If I could pick up a 2.5 short motor for say £300 How much am I looking at to get approx 400 bhp and similar torque if I use my WRX heads etc.

Probably best to go with new rods and pistons.

Would probably go something like this:

Pistons £800
Rods £700
Injectors £550 (some s/h available for nearer £300)
Flywheel £150
Clutch £450
Engine management solution £1000 (more like £1500 fitted and mapped)
Gaskets £200
Head Gaskets £30
Oil, filter and washer, £50
Rebore and wire ring £100
Clean £20
Cambelt £70
Sealant £6
Coolant £5
Other consumables £50
Petrol for related journeys £100

To which you will need to add the cost of the turbo of your choice, say a TD05 with TD06/20G hybrid compressor side. Then you will need exhaust to match if not already. If you're going to convert a npre97 car to front entry, you may need to raise the manifold, or use a custom up and downpipe, either will cost a fair bit to do. Possibly power steering pump and pipes.

Geez, that much ?

I had a prowl around the internet and found forged rods for $380 and JE pistons for $470 so I could save there !

How much is the turbo you mention ?

Can the original ECU not be remapped to suit ?

£300 for a short block? Sounds well cheap to me. Could i get on of them for that price in this country?

I'm not clued up on these things, but would you have to have a closed deck block for 400+BHP? even on 2.5 litres?

Getting the rods and pistons for the 2.5 engine isn't so easy, and the EJ25 parts carry a signiicant price premium. I doubt you would get pistons for £700 actually, more like £800, as I was thinking on EJ20 parts.

You can get them cheaper if you try. But you get what you pay for in some respects. In the grand scheme of things saving even £600 on the entire build isn't massive.

Don't forget to check pistons prices include rings and pins, and the prices I've mentioned include VAT, which strictly speaking you would have to add to prices for US parts.

Not sure about bore thickness, but...if it is similar to an open deck ph2 then no, you would not need to close it for 400 bhp on a 2.5
A 2.5 will need 500bhp to create the same pressures as a 400 bhp 2.0 and they seem to run fine with open deck (and no wire ring)

Shock/horror - someone already recommending a TD05/6-20G hybrid and nobody has seen one run yet (well, nearly nobody )

Andy - sorry

I picked up the block last night - thickness looks to be around 10-15mm. Will measure up and take photos tonight.

Sorry for what ?
It's ok, i've got my own 2.5 to play with Just don't have an open 2.0 to compare bore walls with.

Bore walls are significantly thinner on the EJ25 blocks, and will be less stiff due to the larger diameter, so I'm told anyway

Uprated head studs, and wire ringing should be enough for 400 without problem. You might get away with just uprated centre studs, but until we get some variants, we won't know.
