I have a stantard sti v5 and i am planning to de cat it. I have just fitted a scooby sport back box and was ready to go for the rest when i was told that it could blow up if de catted. Is this true? I want more grunt from the exhaust would de catting do this as the back box did not make much difference? Cheers Gary

Gary, ive been pondering the exact same thing for months, i also have an STiV, SS BB & SS de-cat centre, they are very prone to exhaust mods but the biggest power gain is to be had by removing orig D/P, i think i read somewhere that if all cats are removed John Banks recommended a different ECU remap, anyone else add any comments??

I have an STI5 Type R which i have had a full de-cat on for nearly 2 years and i also have a Blitz panel filter on, apart from a blown maf i haven't had any probs at all.

I had it RR at PE who checked for knock on a hot summers day with thier select monitor and merv said the timing was spot on.

As long as you treat them with care and fill up with at least a minimum of SUL or Optimax with OB they should run fine.
Always leave engine to warm up and cool down nicely.

p.s i hope i haven't boked myself now!

Depends on the car. Some P1s det with a downpipe and they have a more conservative knock setup.

If you are doing it check for boost creep, lean spots and det.

I had the full decat ss system on my STi 5 along with HKS induction. When i fitted my knocklink i found it to be detting occasionally. Removed the HKS and now car is running spot on, no detting, smoother and strangely seems to pull more.
So induction is something to take into account.

I would stick to the standard induction kit if decatting and invest in a knocklink because if i hadnt the hks would still be on and detting would go unnoticed.

Andy McCord, the Lamda sensor is kept and screwed into new dp. I notice your from Preston, me too! Car is Cool Grey Type R with XXX on the reg. What are you driving round these speed camera infested parts?

Andy yes i did keep the sensor it screws back into the new DP.

On a note of the induction kit i had the same problem had a blitz induction kit and apart from blowing my MAF it also didn't make the car run quite right and was prob detting (although i never checked).
After changing the MAF i installed a blitz panel filter instaed and removed the snorkel on the airbox and car runs a lot better and smoother. Car has been fine ever since.

In regard to changing to a de-cat DP as i said before as long as you look after it properly you should be fine doing the mod.

The driveibilty of the car will chage straight away, and all for the better.
