I´m about to upgrade the performance on my car (Impreza GT MY00)
My target is ~330bhp with ECUTEK. Now is it enough with turbo and ECU or MUST I get a IC too (or anything else)?
I´m looking at VF23/VF30 turbos.
When does this turbo´s start kicking and how much boost will they handla up to 7000rpm?

First off consider a hybrid turbo...MD304 from Lateral Perfomance suits a Euro spec car down to the ground. it's only a little slower spooling than the TD04 but holds boost well to 7k rpm.

Quite honestly if you run more than 1.3/1.4 bar on stock Euro internals your asking for trouble!

You will probably need bigger injectors, you should certainly consider an uprated fuel pump and Fuel Regulator (again both from Lateral)

You will require a free flowing exhaust system, Haywards/Scoobysport Downpipe and something like an HKS Hiper system.

Getting the existing exhaust manifold ported will help a bit, replacing it with an HKS (or similar) Tuned Lenght Tubular manifold will make a bigger difference.

Also an Induction Kit...

if you want to get over the 300 brake mark then a Front mount IC will probaly make sense...

If you are lucky this little lot might set you back (inc mapping) 4000GBP or so...

Thanks guys...

Just thought I could run say 18-20psi to get these kind of power.
I was thinking, if I get a little bigger turbo like VF30 then I wont have to use a FMIC, or will it get hot? And 330 was just a number. I´ll be happy with 300 as well.
Today I run Magnex turbo back + ITG panel filter.
Lateral Performance, do they have a web site?
And how much is a MD304?

www.lateralperformance.co.uk or email mark@lateralperformance.co.uk

to add to above, I would get the fuel pump before you get anything else!

The vf23 was no good over 1.3 (just under 19psi) bar on the original top mount on my car. Even at this I suspect it was way too hot - I got big gains by swapping to the td05

TD05 better then VF23 :/
Hmmmm, now I´m confused?!?!?!
I rec. that the TD04 is OK to 1.2bar, TD05 1.3bar.
Now where does the VF23/VF30/MD304 fit????
Not having the founds for an IC I´ll have to run with my stock

You can still do it in stages, just moderate your boost While not ideal, a manual boost controller, FCD and vf23 runs 'OK' with the stock JECS. You can then remove the fcd & do the remap once the FMIC goes on.

You should get everything checked if you go this route though - a slightly under-reading MAF (common) will suddenly start giving you big problems.

The difference between a vf23 and a td04 running 1.2bar is large - the td04 is just a superheater above 5k working this hard!

Cool

MD304 is a hybrid VF22/28 turbo. It has the smaller VF28 P18 exhaust housing with a few mods, the larger VF22 compressor housing which is ported and the a larger and stronger compressor wheel fitted along with a stonger Wastegate actuator...I run one on my car, a well used MY98 UK car, and it performs indecently well 1 bar around 3k rpm, 1.25 bar (my peak) from 3.3k rpm to the red line. easily capable of over 340 brake if fitted with the other mods I mentioned

Don't think the vf23 will reliably provide the air required to give you 330, certainly not without an FMIC too. Don't know anything about the vf30.

I'm currently around 310-320 on a front entry td05 at 1.3 bar - my 440's are at 95% on an admittedly rich map (WB lambda bung goes in tonight...hopefully ).

Assuming your breathing into and out of the engine is already done; I'd be looking at fuel pump, maybe new injectors (or just raising pressure if you *really* intend to stay at 330), different turbo (MD hybrid will do it, so will others) and an FMIC as well as the custom remap from someone with previous record of doing such cars. If you want to continue using ecu boost control I'd factor in a 3 port solenoid too.

In car Knock/Lambda monitoring capability would be a nice to have too - you have less room for error the closer you get to the mechanical limits.

Assuming you get this power level, your clutch wont last long (depends on driving style though) - you'll change it for an uprated one (organic if you have mechanical sympathy) and then realise that your gearbox will still need doing soon....and so on....

Richard
PS: why do you want this power level? If you're intending track work your money would be better spent getting a reliable 280-290 and sorting brakes and suspension with the money you save....imho
