how hard would it be to put a single turbo EJ20 engine, from the uk or japan into a LHD impreza? besides the difficulty involved with actually puting an engine into a car (which must be quite hard), is there any extra problems because of the different layout?
Thanks,
Kotaro

It is problem when you have MY99-00 and MY94-97 wiring. Sti and Turbo differs too. It cannot be interchargeable. (diferrent dash connectors, diferrent wiring, ecu on other side (wiring length),different ecu etc. It is hard job. Now i do the same. I have STi III wagon and want to rebuild to MY00 turbo 4-door. It looks impossible to do it :-)

Thanks for the answers.
So If I understood correctly, the main problem would be different wiring between MY 94-97 and 98-00. So, supposing the engine comes with the ecu and everything it needs so it can start as it is, could you swap an MY98-00 WRX or STi engine into an impreza 2.0 (non turbo) sport?...or any impreza?

It's not hard at all. Everything bolts up. You just have to make sure you have the crossmember as it's got a big dip in it for the up-pipe. Even the wiring isn't too bad, you just need diagrams for both cars and both wiring looms plus the turbo ECU. Until my car looked like a crushed pop can mine was working just fine.

Confirmed. Now I have STi III engine MY96 (with car - wagon) and try to place into MY00 4-door turbo sedan. Impossible. 96MY wiring (2-piece) cannot be mirrored and placed to sedan (1-piece wiring). 96 wiring is different than MY00 (number of connectors to ecu, dashboard and dials). Standard MY00 ECU cannot manage Sti engine. There is some possibility: 1) buy a aftermarket ECU (link ECU, motec) and place it into original MY00 wiring and STi engine (im not sure that it will works 100%) or 2) buy 96 wiring (LHD) from dismantlers. :-(
