'ello all,

Here's an odd one. If I do some spirited driving on my private track (naturally the engine temperature increases - not into the danger zone or anything but into the top third of the gauge. Oil pressure and temperature remain normal. Normal (on occasion spirited driving) about town and freeway driving does not appear to increase the temperature. Why would this happen only on sustained boost?

The explanation is quite simple.. when on boost you're burning a LOT more fuel, and some of that additional heat energy enters the cooling system, increasing your water temperature.

As long as the car is moving, the radiator should easily be able to dissipate the addtional energy, so the water temperature shouldn't increase by very much.

Cheers,

Alex

Alex - that's just the problem - the water temperature does increase. I agree that water flow should increase and this with the increased air flow should prevent an increase being reflected. This is not however the case, hence the query.

More boost=more temperarure. If the system has little or no spare capacity that will be reflected in the water temp reading.
On my car temp fluctuates between 82c and 96c depending on ambient temp and how hard the car is driven.

Harvey - is this variance reflected on your standard water temp gauge? If so, where does it peak?

From my observations the O/E h2o guage is inert from before 76cent to over 96 cent and I think it is designed this way so that owners do not worry unduly while sat in traffic or pulling hard up long hills. My observations are from the digital read out on my Link Engine Management. Where are you getting your readings from?
If you really do have a temperature problem there are several things to look at.

Based on the standard water temp. gauge. It is also using water (3l in about 300km so far) which leads me to believe it's not a false reading.

So if you do not have a water leak it starts to sound like a head gasket. Sorry.

You win the prize. Went to visit my car last night and the head gasket was starting to go on one cylinder. Cause unknown. Joy...

Hope the repair is easy, straight forward and quick for you. Let us know how you get on. You could consider a head skim at the same time. A)To end up with a flat heads to bolt back on to the blocks.
B)Modest C.R. increase to improve off boost performance.
Just an idle thought.
