Demand your money back (if they get ****** throw the sale of goods act at them). And then get a proper engine management solution.

Surely just a dawes leaves the fuel cut in place, which means you're unlikely to blow the engine up by putting 30psi (or whatever) into it, whereas with a superchip, adjust it wrong, and you have lost that defence, so "bang" is more likely to happen if it is set up wrong. Also seen a couple of threads recently about superchipped cars frying sensors possibly due to very high EGTs, may be coincidence - draw your own conclusion.

For the price of the superchip, you could get something much better (IMHO) - an ECUTEK. Only from Power Engineering at the moment for bugeyes, I believe, but will be getting to other mapers any day

I seem to remember that there's this mad doctor from Scotland who'll sell them for "classics" via scoobyshop. Now what was his name? . . .

I've a MY 02, and it has a WRsport backbox. Worked a treat, and didn't sound too loud.

I've since had a Superchip fitted. The first 50 miles were not good, with the engine check light coming on, and the engine cutting intermittently above 5000rmp. Went back, and came back fixed. No extra performance, though, acceleration is pretty much unchanged. Seems to be rather more lag than before, and occasional poor starting when hot.
I suspect they merely turned down the boost, so how do I check the boost, and what should it be? Anything else to look for?

Was done by the dealer (or arranged by them, Palmer in Carlisle). If yours works OK, I guess its something they should be able to fix..

I would do a search and it will reveal how primitive those things are. A Dawes would do more for you, and cost 1/10 the price.

Dawes is great, especially when you hit fuel cut as you are overtaking! So then you need to buy an FCD and have the confidence to wire it up yourself. Then when you have done this you will need to set the boost corectly, so you don't blow your engine to pieces. This is best done at a rolling road, with a nice boost guage. Rolling road costs about £50+VAT each time just to get a power run. So by the time you have done all this you may as well have just chipped it

Question

Hmmm Isn't a superchip just a FCD ? The boost then being hiked up by a bleed valve ? Why would this be any easier to set up ? and why would it be safer ??

The one 'tricky' bit of a DIY superchips is the FCD wiring, I think - although that's only really finding which is the right wire . You need a Dawes, FCD & boost gauge, & say 2 hours to get it all working? Not even sure you need the FCD really, just don't get greedy with the boost on the Dawes to start with; if it's not enough later on, stick on an FCD on a very very small increase & there you go... can't see why you need a RR?

Easier to set up coz someone else does it with a rolling road, and a boost guage costing about four times what mine did. Also able to check AFR det etc. You also get before and after plots to see the improvements.

Chaz,

I bought my Dawes and ARF second hand for £100. New it would maybe be £150. Boost guage was already fitted but maybe £80?

That is all you need to sensibly up the boost, and give you more than a superchip. UNDER £200 and you keep the standard fuel cut. I would either go for that or Ecutek.

Chaz, no you cant! Power Engineering and others do a different type of remap for pre 99 cars.

Try David Wallis he may be able to help on an ecu map, and its cheaper!

Eldar,

I had a superchips conversion a month ago to my 2001 WRX and am suffering with the same problems. Check engine light comes on every few days when engine is under load with a quite violent bang/rev limiter coming into effect.
Superchips claim they've never heard of the problem, yeah right!!...and the dealer says I need to go to Sunaru to see what the problem is. Not feeling much like a customer at the moment, will keep you informed.

Not that it makes the solution any better price-wise, but it's interesting to note that the latest SC offerings use a fuel cut raiser rather than remover....

Simon - yours sounds very bad, and I'd personally be very nervous even driving it as it is. Do you know anyone with DeltaDash to see what's going on?

I kept a log in excel of all the times the check engine light on (and went out again!) and sent it to Superchips. They now admit that this is possible and that I'm probably hitting the boost limit.
I'm going back to my garage next tuesday to have the work done to it, I suspect that they will just turn down the bleed valve to give a lower level of boost.
I'll let you know the results.

Sounds like mine was originally - they somehow adjusted the boost to reduce it, and stopped the engine check light coming on. Still didn't run properly, and is down on power against standard. Can't get hold of them, so I think it is time to get it removed

Well, mine went back and the garage re-fitted it from the beginning again. In doing this he allegedly found that he had incorrectly installed it to start with. There are several installation options depending on exactly which model you have and he'd configured it wrongly.
Since then there's been no problems (2000km's+) although it does seem slightly down on power than the first fitting. Can't say if it feels any better than standard, perhaps slightly(?)
In hindsight I'd probably not bother to have had it done. I guess there's no such things as a free lunch...
