Knocking; you don't want it
Knocking is caused by many different things, but, for example, increasing gas flow (the first stages of tuning - induction, etc.) will make the fuel mixture leaner. The ECU may compensate for this (add more fuel), it may not, but it certainly only will to a point. When the mixture gets weaker, the engine will run hotter, promoting knock. Knock is when the flame ignites before it's meant to, causing a massive pressure wave to hit the cylinder head. If it does this enough, the engine pops.
Upping the boost - the other favourite - also increases the likelyhood of det (higher pressure & also higher intake charge as the turbo is running harder).
What the knocklink does is tell you when this is happening; when the thing starts blinking (above a 'safe' level), it is time to remove foot from loud pedal. If it does this often, there's something funny going on & it's time to sort it out before the engine blows.
In short , a very handy bit of kit. Available from all good performance parts stockists
