david,
I was hoping you would say that.... seem some pics of you under someones car doing a down pipe and you looked at home... i.e you seems to know what you where doing...
I will see about getting an up pipe...
Im not totally sure if it is the up pipe... is there a sure way to tell???
What gaskets will i need and are they necessary...!!

Hi,
Does anyone know if the up-pipes are the same on all classic shape impreza's..???
I.e will the up pipe from a WRX STI version IV type-R be the same as a MY95 WRX, as i think mine may be split and may be able to get one off the above car..??
Any help would be great.

i know that they can be a very awkward to fit.....scooby sport took 5 hours to fit mine, they had to remove the turbo(because of seized bolts)and lift the engine of its mounts.....
the symptoms of my knackered pipe, was blowing, when starting from cold..hope this is of help

i seem to get a blowing noise but not loads, i am getting the same boost too no change, or is this because once it is heated up the split seals...???
Is the blowing loud..??

there was no change in performance, just a slight but noticable and very irrating 'blowing'when cold, which would stop as soon as the engine was warm!
i think its because that section of the exhaust contains an 'expansion joint'which had just worn out, there was no visable signs of wear, splits or holes, but fitting the new pipe cured it
removed heatshields at the same time, btw

This pipe is a b*stard to fit...at least make it worthwhile and fit an aftermarket one.
If you need convincing, cut the heatshield off an OE one

hi,i was at powerstation yesterday for a unichip, all fitted but they could not map it because of blowing uppipe, they said it not only blows but also it will suck air in as well the lamda senser will think its running lean so throw more fuel in,so at the momentits running ritch,i to need a new up pipe they said its about 3 hours, pipe is £145 +vat.they said it will effect spool up
my93 wrx
full de-cat
blitze induction
dawes @9psi boost
268.5 bhp @6690 rpm
229 lbf-ft @5640 rpm
should be a good 280 bhp when mapped.Dug

Your ecu is only using the lambda sensor at low revs and load - at all other times it's reading from the maps.
However, PS need to be able monitor lambda to set up your Unichip safely, hence their caution

Replacing the up pipe is a bit of a pig...
If you leave the manifold on then you need to remove the downpipe, turbo, top mount intercooler and then release the engine from it's mountings to jack it up and get clearance to pull the pipe out from above...you need a 2/4 post car lift ideally...
But if you are prepared to remove the manifold (port it while it's off!) then it is a little easier and can be tackled at home with ramps/axle stands. Although you still need to remove the turbo, downpipe and intercooler
What ever you do, replace ALL the gaskets with new ones, and make sure that all the threads are in good condition!
