It started as a VF28 but any VF with a P18 housing could be used as a donor. It is a Turbo Dynamics hybrid from Mark Aigin (R19KET). It now flows much better than a VF28, VF23 and possibly VF22 too - Mark could give you more details. I also tried a TD04L hybrid too. Both very good indeed.
Oh I saw Mr Garrod's VF22 today. Nice paperweight too.

Had my MY99 tek 3'd last week by John B. All went well (i'm sure that skin will grow back John!) until John took me out in his for a run. Now i have to think about turbos...
So which would folks recommend for a decat MY99 (with dawes and ITG)?
VFM is a consideration

I am after a new Turbo as well at the moment but don't want to go down the Hybrid Route just want a standard replacement as I had some trouble with mine !!
The turbo on mine is the IHI VF23 - I ant to upgrade to the IHI VF30 (1 less blade on the comptressor wheel apparently ?) makes it more durable ? not sure if this is right or wrong !!
Can someone give me a contact for WREXY ? so I can contact him.
Cheers

I need a lesson in turbos for a scooby...
What is a hybrid in the context of turbos?
what are the differences between them all?
Is there somewhere where this has been all done before? perhaps i'll do a search!
Thanks, Jon

guys,
dont understand this crap about hybrids being any better/worse than standard.
they arent dodgily assembled mix and match units.
the strength and durability of them is pureley dependent on the design of the compressor wheel since the exhaust wheels and cores are pretty much the same across the vf range.
If you get a strong design of compressor, for example like I had on my hybrid, it can actually be stronger then the standard vf23. It depends which turbo you choose and for what purpose.
vf30s are supposed to be tough, but the biggest problem with swapping is expecting the stadnard ecus to be able to take full advantage of the different power delivery characteristics of a different size compressor.
Hybridising can also be done by porting turbos, and swapping exhaust housings etc change promote spool up/flow limits.
You can have blades cut etc, if you want, but this is likely to be only be done if the turbo company feels it is safe to do so, after all these things can spin at 2000 revs per second!

Jim what did you go for in the end?
Have to say that comparing my car with a hybrid VF (which started as VF28) that the difference between this and a standard VF28 on a P1 (which has shorter gears and different cams) for similar boost is absolutely stunning, worth every penny.

John,
Graig from Diesel Distributors suggested me that the VF29 is better from the VF28 and spools up little bit earlier while it gives wider torque curve and better throttle response (which suits my needs).
Also it costs less than the VF28 and bear in mind they haven't any more turbo in stock from previous orders so their prices are a little bit higher than before.
Although I don't know if it works with my current exhaust setup...

Mr Devil - Yes please. Any feedback would be very useful.
Found some stuff on Turbos on the MRT site and IHI Turbocharger site so i'm beginning to get an idea of the various ones available.

...then i wouldn't be quite so interested!!!
I blame John Banks entirely for this situation. Tek3 was definitely going to be my last mod. just as the decat was and the dawes before that and the back box before that etc...

If any one is after a hybrid just now, I have one for sale in the sale forum.
Its a BT270 and was last seen making 320 bhp and 340lbft on my car a 1.3 bar.
I said before I was selling it that it was great, it just makes you want to go for a sixth gear all the time.
I have also been out in a car with a big VF series turbo, and it too was very very good. If you even think about it, you really should go for a bigger turbo.

Type R - if the bearing is OK then why not speak to Mark Aigin about getting your VF23 hybridized or just a new compressor wheel? New compressor wheel, sounds like an excuse to me...

A very valid point I've spoken to Mark, I don't really think the Turbo can be saved from certain death !!
A hybrid turbo is out of my price range, I am not so displeased with performance of the IHI VF series. I know I can get more etc etc but I think I'll play it safe.
Ps Anyone with a HKS Racing Suction Kit fitted - any opinions (MAF Failure etc) I am probably going to add a Apexi Filter for cleaner air flow.

John,
Chances are, that if the compressor wheel has let go, the turbo will be pretty much scrap.
Unfortunately, when the wheel lets go, it's so out of balance, that the shaft bends.
New bearings, and shafts aren't available for the VF turbo's, so this means it would need a new core, which have a similar price to a new turbo !!!!!
Mark.

Good reason to get one of your fabby compressor wheels that is a bit stronger then
Was the VF22 with the shattered compressor wheel unrepairable then - bearing wise - or was this one lucky?

Not certain what you mean, about the VF22. If you mean yours, the turbo was never damaged.
However, my VF22, is now a paper weight !!!
