For anyone who's interested - should be anyone with an induction kit!
I've been keeping an eye on the temperatures under there (at the induction-kit intake point) over the past few days. With an engine at running temperature, being in traffic for 30s, temperatures rise to 40C. 1 minute and they can be 70C - these are both with ambient external temperatures of 15-20C. From 70C, it takes a couple of minutes of free-flowing air (I'd say over 40mph) to reduce the temperatures again.
70C is one hell of a temperature to throw at the compressor. However good your intercooler is, it's not going to be able to cope that well with this sort of temperature! Just bear it in mind before zooming off from those lights... Det here we come

Agree. Have a mate who got similar temp readings. Open pod filters should be used with care.

I'm doing the same, but my measure point is on top/side of the standard intercooler, next to the turbo ... temps up to 100°C are not uncommon whilst not on the move

Fortunately the FMIC I just bought can not be installed with standard airbox , nor will it fit with my "cold air box"... you can't win

That's why the APS induction kit is a good idea - grabs cooler air from the wheel well rather than the engine bay. I am also considering getting those nice wing vents I have seen on a couple of cars. At least they won't be cosmetic on mine..

One thing that the temperature movements do show is that if the car's moving, the air that the induction kit gets is fine - it's only stop/start traffic that makes the difference (and preumably Milton Keynes ). I think most of the improvement the APS or similar gives is in the length of tubing.

nom, I don't think there are any FMIC kits that do allow keeping the airbox. At least now I don't have to cut things or loose the aircon (pipe & slippers comment, I know )

As for the cold air pipe, don't make me say the dreaded M*F word - it should go in the swear filter really

I Havent seen it used with the airbox, but I think that the Pace FMIC may just fit.

Stevie, that's the one I got (long story, don't ask ) and it doesn't fit with the standard airbox (according to their own manuals).

Something to do with the pipe from FMIC to throttle body being in the way.

EvilB, You are right...the Pace doesn't fit using the air box

I even went back out one night with the air box in one hand and a tool kit in the other, determined to make it 'fit'.

Without a cut and re-route job (more lag), you have no chance of fitting the air box!

I reckon the better bet might be to fabricate a box to take the Pace pipe through and retain the 'cone'???
