Default Gearbox Woes

My current gearbox is getting very noisy again . It sounds like a bearing or a chipped tooth on the output shaft / gears as the noise changes with road speed & is not dependant on what gear you are in .

The original box was jumping out of 5th gear so I fitted a 2/h box I got cheaply . The 2/h box turned out to have a very noisy reverse so I got my mechanic to refit the old box with the 5th gear assembly of the 2/h box . He also had to fit the centre diff of the 2/h box cos the old diff wouldn't fit over the newer 5th gear assembly . The result worked very well until the last few weeks when it has been getting gradually noisier .

I'm going on holiday in a few weeks so I'll not need the car for a while & it will be a good chance to get it repaired . But I'm not sure what to do . Do I get the current box stripped & repaired or should I buy a good 2/h box & fit it instead ?

I'm favouring fitting another 2/h box cos by the time I pay labour & buy parts it would leave repairing the current box an expensive option . Then in my own time I could maybe rebuild 1 good box out of the 2 old boxes & sell it on .

Opinions appreciated .

Turbo
