Question

Apologies firstly for those following my decat question bonanza, however on the way home from work during a little jaunt with a motorbike and at the same time performing an overtake, the dreaded overboost happened. More or less stopped me dead in the water - question is, what can I do about it. It made me look a right prat.

BTW, the decat system is the dogs danglies and the exhaust note is awesome not to mention the aaarrrrrgh type acceleration. Recommended.

So, is it a process of reducing the boost thingy or a remap or what???

Ta.

Ah ok, now for the later cars drilling the restrictor plug sorted out this problem, i think on earlier cars its different as you do the opposite but the best person to talk to is John Banks as hes done quite alot of research on this problem.
The decat exhaust has freed your engine up alittle, i suppose you could now go for an electronic boost gauge to try to resolve the problem thou?

Brian,
2 main options are:
1. Fit some form of fuel cut override device to remove the fuel cut point (but be very careful when doing this as in some cases you can cause your car to run very lean)
2. Lower the boost level using either a electronic boost controller or a manual valve in the line to the boost control solenoid. If you fit a valve in this line and tighten it down, you will bleed off less air from the actuator and you will reduce the boost.

Hope this helps

Ta to you both for the feedback.

I have booked the car into PE to get this sorted - however the earliest they can do is the 11th June. In the meantime, what can I do to prevent this from happening, apart from the obvious 'keep it below 3000' - is it just a question of no foot on the floor antics.

If it does happen again, what are the likely consequences notwithstanding embarrassment?

Brian,
It's not quite as drastic as 'keep it below 3,000 rpm' but just don't floor it in the higher gears and you should be OK. Gradual acceleration is the order of the day until you get it sorted out.

The only other option you have at the moment if you want to remove the cuts is to disconnect the line to the boost control solenoid and blank off the open end at the T-piece. This will reduce the boost significantly and so will stop the fuel cuts but your car will feel incredibly slow.

Andy,

I think option 1 sounds much better - just have to watch that heavy right foot.
