Default What to pay for a cam belt change??

Picking my MY01 STI up Sunday.
It's got 62k on the clock, am i right in thinking the cam belt should be changed at around 65k, and what is an average cost for this?
Cheers
Jamie

Default cambelt

They should be done at 45k then every 45k thereafter. I paid Len at Subaru4you in Newbury (recommended - great bloke, really knows his stuff) £630 for a full 90k service on mine which included cambelt, tensioner kit, all fluids etc.

Sorry, just read yours is an MY01 - think the intervals are longer for them - mine's a MY99, which have the 45k intervals

I think newage models it's every 50k miles. I had mine done by an official Subaru dealer when I bought it (mine's a classic). Cost just over £200 I think. Will be about £100 more if the cambelt tensioner also needs doing (mine didn't).

Edit - these are main dealer prices so an independant should be less.

I don't know how much help i will be,but the Classics as already stated need them every 45k,and the Blobeye(the one after yours)are 60k or every 5 years................your problem if yours is the same intervals as a Blobeye is that if it has not been done it is now well overdue to be done both on time and mileage, and i personally would not drive it in that case,as if it goes you could be left with a huge bill.

My advice is check thouroughly and see proof it has been done,as without proof an (unscrupulous)seller, whether private or trade could assure you it has been done when it hasn't!!

Thats incorrect. I have a blobeye and the cambelt is to be changed every 50K miles. The major service intervals are 30K. So on a 50K its a minor service with cambelt change, which my local dealer quoted me £230 to do.

Regards

Matt

Tell me more Mr Lewis

I'm not too bad with the spanners to be fair, but never messed about with cam belts as don't want to ***** the timing up and knacker the engine.

Should i go for a genuine Subaru or are there any better quality cam belts??

I would buy a Subaru belt.

I have replaced CamBelts since there have been CamBelts ..... it is NOT rocket science, but if you're too chicken - leave it to those who do it regularly.

But the feeling when you do something like that is GREAT!

Just taken the Gearbox out of the Wifes Micra - got it repaired - put a new clutch in - replaced Gearbox ....... good feeling as you drive it and its better than it was before Cost me all of £120 for Gearbox Repair AND Clutch Kit.

But, if you can't do it, don't do it! Leave it to the real men ..........

If had a micra i would do all the work myself, after all it's only a go-kart really

If you ***** it up you could replaced the whole engine for the price of a Subaru cam belt

My mate has 2 garages and they use " gates" timing belts. If the belt fails Gates cover the cost of the rebuild inc parts, you don't need a Subaru belt. Gates are rated as a good belt. HDC use them AFAIK

Edited to say if belt is fitted by the garage and not by you.

Graham Goods belts are much cheaper and he uses them for all his rebuilds..... That's good enough for me.
It's a really straighforward job, if your good with a set of spanners and meticulous about your work.

Just remember people get very uncomfortable when it comes to selling on if the car hasn't got a FSH including the cam belt change.

I certainly wouldn't buy one without a dealer/known specialist cambelt change having been done. So you might save a few quid now but cost you a lot more in the future.

(and just to add to concencious.. 50k belt changes on a newage )
