Default RROD Queries

Last night my Elite suffered with 2 red lights and for the last week or 2 the xbox fans have been kicking in even when idling on the dashboard, there's also been a few random freezes during gameplay.

The 2 red lights indicate an overheating problem so the xbox is doing it's job and shutting off to prevent damage, however the xbox was very cool, this lead me to check the power brick which was getting rediculously hot.

Obviously sending the 360 back won't fix the problem if it is the psu. On shifting the power brick from the floor to on top of my cool ali lian pc case it seemed to work flawlessly.

So if the psu is faulty and sending inconsistent voltages/power to the 360 could this cause it to be kicking the fans in unnecessarily and also invoking the 2 red rings during gameplay?

A quick google has said that the fan in the power brick is feeble and can slow down when it's on it's last legs.

Anybody else had any 2 red ring/power issues?

If it's Ok now I'd just leave it be and see how you go.

I don't want to open the power supply as it's under warrenty, however it's past the 12months, so does the 3yr actually cover the power or just the 360?

Afaik the 3yr only covers rrod problems, however if it's the power causing the problems and not the 360 then this isn't covered.

I'm pretty sure MS would make you prove that the PSU is causing it - unless you have another to test it with that might prove difficult.

I know that Just Cause did give some people problems with freezing, although I think it was save game related - the game would freeze when saving and take the save game down with it - I never had any problems with the game at all but I did play it about 6 months after it came out so it had probably been patched.

If the PSU is acting up, then doesn't the light change colour?

apparently it should go red or flicker red if it's faulty, or stay green when the xbox rrod's (as opposed to turning amber), can't remember which

I never noticed at the time of it happening.

I know know because when I have sent my 360 back for RROD, one of the first things they ask you is "what colour is the light on the PSU"
