I'd apply if I were not way down south. I'll put my nerd hat on but I think Computer forensics is really interesting, I do however imagine there are a lot of unpleasant things.

I honestly don't have any more details. All I can say is watch the press and the vacancies on the West Yorkshire Police website

My previous and current firms are both involved with computer forensics. We did many investigations for police forces that (I'm glad to say) resulted in successful prosecutions. There are very strict rules on how and who can view them, but viewed they must be, as every image has to be categorised and assigned a rating for use in court A very grim task.
Thankfully it's not that common. There is also a lot of work around industrial espionage and disputes. As you say, a very interesting field of work.
I would imagine that the local police forces are now heavily involved with CEOP - those boys have some serious heavy weight industry backing and access to some very talented forensics guys. They also have a caged secure PC which contains all the dodgy child related images ever found on the Internet - there are currently millions

Why exactly do they still keep the images? After a prosecution I can't imagine they are any use?

Yep - as BuRR says. Although there are a lot of dodgy images around, the nature of child **** is that it tends to be carried out by a (thankfully) relatively small number of highly organised gangs (certainly at a country level) - the investigations of this nature often go right around the world, so it is possible to track back to the original gangs by looking at the images that are being distributed - it's not like standard adult **** which has an almost limitless amount of images, with thousands of new ones being added every day.

what a con they expect you to pay the postage for the application form!!!
Why not do the technical thing and have it as a downloadable pdf or word doc on your website?
21-25k hmmm you may get a desperate student for that much but that is about it.
Viper Technical Support Officer!
Is this sniffer snake division of narcotics, the snakes can get in places the dogs can't

There are plenty of "decent" grads out there..... we're just hoping for an enthusiastic one or four......
Its all very well having qualifications in computers, but you can't beat proper experience IMHO.

Steve. Thanks for the heads up.
I agree with David on this. I'm just about to post another thread asking about whether anyone has the SANS GSEC Certification because I'm going to start the Forensics Investigator course next month...
As we've discussed, I would take a pay cut to work in this sector, but £25k is simply too low to get good experience.
I've just posted an internal job offer within our Bank (soon to go external) asking for a Technical Specialist to work for me on Incident Response & Technical Security.. I had a big discussion with Senior management who were surprised to find we'll have to start this at at least £28K minimum to get the right people interested, otherwise we will get bright people but with no depth...
It's a shame the Public sector can't adjust to the fact that it needs to compete with the likes of my business....
You have a PM BTW...

Ollie. I can't speak for Burr as the hiring manager, but I think you'll find the job fascinating stuff. If that type of money is OK for you, then I'd say you'll probably not find a more rewarding job. Especially helping to put some nasty people away...
I'd say it'll be technically demanding with the emphasis on proper procedures and doing things right so as to be admissible in court.. You may be working some un-sociable hours, but the team spirit should be good. I'm not party to some of the more 'special' tasks that may be asked of you (neither will you probably until you're working there) but this type of thing will add some excitement (if that type of thing excites you...)
Steve could no doubt point to some great documentation.. but I'd say check out the NIST 800 series Security Guidelines as a starter for 10...
#800-101 - Cell Phone Forensics
#800-86 - Guide to Integrating Forensic Techniques into Incident Response
#800-72 - Guidelines on PDA Forensics
The ACPO site I believe has some guidelines around UK Police force use of forensics (all good for swatting for any job interview )
HTH...
