Cool Can you use smartphone as sat nav SIM free?

Off to U S of A in a few weeks, and although I have a (admittedly aging) 'proper' satnav with US maps, I though it might be handy to use a smartphone instead, but don't want to incur outrageous data charges (or call charges, I'll take my work phone for that ) so wanted to look into possibility of doing it SIM free.

Would either be iPhone 4s or Samsung Galaxy S4.

You could try NavFree or Waze.

You need something that downloads the maps whilst you're at home rather than on the fly. CoPilot will download the maps then you can use navigation offline.
Not sure about Waze.

Sygic is probably the best of the bunch as it uses tomtom maps.

I bought eullesse sim(not sure on spelling) when I was in America at Christmas and it gave me unlimited Internet so I just used google maps on my s3 and it was great. You also get unlimited calls and txt to the US and the UK but its a pain to phone home.

Using you own phone for calls and texts is an absolute fortune in the US so swapping out the sim meant I never had to worry. The Internet on my phone came in handy when I was bored due to my daughter and missus shopping for too long.

I know people say free wireless is availed but its much easier when you have the Internet all the time

I used my tomtom, its has world maps on it, it was a godsend... cos them USA roads are ****, esp the turnpikes.

whoever designed them crap things wants shooting.

try borrow a tomtom if you can, failing that if it a holiday your looking forward to and don't want any issues just buy a tomtom LOL. always come in handy anyways.

300 quid though

Failing that though, the Malls will sell a cheap USA only sat NAV you could buy if you want to save some cash, do you plan to drive lots or stay in the surrounding area, thing about the USA is if you drive the area enough like anywhere you learn it, you only really need sat nav if your going miles, the place is VAST and the city centres are like spaghetti, I always drove to the nearest metro outside of town and trained in ( advice) never drive in
