Default OS on a stick

When will it be possible to do this, as opposed to it being on a cd

Iv just dumped old dell and bought a wifi printer. I can't get it to go wireless without first plugging it into computer and inserting a cd.

Girlfriend has a network and I ripped the dvd out of mine before the dump, now iv got spend another 15 quid for cables /power supply to connect to her netbook.

It'll probably get used once.

You can also mount the ISO image file of Windows using Virtual Clone Drive or similar

You can fit most versions of Linux on USB drives too. That's how the Raspberry Pi works.

It's a bit hard to understand the request, but I think he's referring to printer drivers being on a CD. In which case go to the web site for the printer manufacturer and download the drivers from there.

Reading back, that does sound like what he means.

If that's the case, I don't see the issue.

Apologies fro confusion, and thanks for replies

It was a general enquiry as to when / is there going to come a time when cd is redundant for the software...

It's setting up the wireless connection on this printer firstly though, as far as I can see instructions first you have to plug in usb and insert cd. We only have a netbook.

( I'm intending to just use phone for basic invoice printing, till I source another computer -or may just use playbook)

Pretty much now I'd say, either download from the web or mount an OS on a USB stick. All possible today and has been for some time. Even companies are distributing via download only. The latest OS X (mountain lion) was a download only option.

My Windows 8 install was USB too. Never use CD/DVD's these days; all download.
