Default VHS to DVD

I have a box of 20 year old family videos and would like to put some of them onto DVDs with some basic editing if possible..

Google is full of answers (too many ) but what do I go for that works and is reasonably straightforward and doesn't cost the earth.

Suggestions please ideally based on what you have actually used.

Cheers, David

PS. I would be using a desktop with Windows 7 if that is relevant.

I've connected up tape player to computer before now and used some program to digitize it, can't be that different with vhs ?

I'd tell you which programme it was but my computer won't reboot -its quite possibly finally dead.

Throw vhs player couple weeks back as well

I wouldn't bother Dave , just keep a vhs player in good order and when you get the urge to play an old tape of you and the Mrs down at Brighton Pier or wherever , just dust it off and away you go. Its a bit like what to do with your 8mm movies - I get mine out from the early 60's and screen them with my old Eumig projector - The thing rattles away the same bulb from 1962 ! . The kids/grandkids love it its an EVENT . Then I pack it all up and get it out again in 10 years.

Something like this to get the image off your video recorder into the PC. Vary in price from about 15-40 but the Hauppauge is a known brand with drivers for Windows7, ie. save a couple of quid on a no name brand, could be grief with drivers.

Windows Movie Maker which comes with W7 should do you fine for simple editing, plenty of tutorials on youtube for making dvd's.

Thanks for comments guys.

I take the point about not bothering but I'd still like to go ahead as I want to send a couple of DVD overseas which make it easy.

The name Roxio comes up in searches so anyone used that?

Could always pick up a Panasonic VHS and DVD combo player like the DMR-EX95 second hand from somewhere as it has a nice function where you can put a VHS in the VHS player side and a DVD-RAM/-+r/-+rw disc in the other and on the front of the player there are transfer buttons to record directly from VHS straight to DVD. Should help keep backups of the tapes before they degrade into dust
