Apple Problems
I know there are quite a few apple users on here so was wondering if any of you have had problems tethering your iphone with your macbook? I updated my laptop last night and since then it is refusing to tether using USB.
I have googled it and there seems to be a few wide spread problems with the only solutions being offered too complicated and way above my head. I don't pay £thousands for a combination that is incapable of doing the basics and requires me to be a computer tech to get it working again. What is going on Apple?

What did you google? Maybe that will help us to understand your problem. Right now I don't have enough detail to help.

Firstly, it seems pretty rare, there would be an outrage if it stopped for a significant amount of people.
Secondly, that doesn't help you, it sucks when things stop working.
Thirdly, lets try some basic stuff before taking the advice on that link. I'd go to Network Preferences, Click the Apple then System Preferences, then Network. Is there any mention of the iPhone? I only used tethering for a short while so am working from memory. If there was I'd delete it, highlight it and click the - sign. Plug your phone in again and it should try to set itself up again. Turn tethering on and off on your phone. Lets try the little things first.

Thanks,
I deleted it and reinserted the cable but nothing happens. The iPhoto pops up but as far as tethering and the internet is concerned it doesnt exist.

Can you provide a few more details please:
1. iPhone type
2. iOS version on the device
3. Mac type and OS version
Does the phone display the tethering options and can they be enabled? Have you tried tethering by bluetooth or wifi (depends on the model, most can do USB and Bluetooh, I think only the iPhone 4 and above can do Wifi tethering, ie; creating a hotspot on the phone)
Have you tried, if possible, a different USB port on the Mac (I'm guessing here you want to tether the Mac to the iPhone so you can provide network connectivity to the Mac from the iPhone?)

A new version of iTunes will likely be released tonight, this may well fix your problem. If you can't wait my next step would be...
Open Finder and click Go on the menu bar. Select Go to Folder and past this in
/System/Library/Extensions/
Scroll down till you find AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext and delete it.
Now you'll have to reinstall iTunes, download it from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Restart your machine
It's the same as the advice in your link but a simpler method.

Its an iPhone 4S iOS 6.
Not sure on Mac. Its a basic white one 17 months old on snow leopard.
Phone tethering option is on. It was working perfectly before the update last night. I dont think its the cable as other features still work on it.

Jack has a point, iTunes 11 is probably going to appear after the apple event today. It might help
As it is the iPhone 4 give the Bluetooth or wif if tethering options a shot. Not sure if either of them will be faster than USB tethering ( not sure on transfer rates of wifi and Bluetooth). This would allow you to check if tethering is working at all.

Wifi tethering is what Im using as I have cancelled my broadband - no point and one of the strengths of getting an iphone on an unlimited data tariff.
It is usually as quick but will often time out compared to the usb which is more reliable. Its no massive problem but a pain non the less. I will see if they release an update and go from there.
