Default Might need a cheap desktop..........

Looks like ANOTHER of my computers has gone west after being in France.

So........does anyone know of any good deals?

It will ONLY get used for surfing the net, storing some music and photos, and doing a few letters. That's it.

So I don't need a 1TB hard-drive, or 4GB of RAM.

I also HAVE a decent keyboard, monitor and mouse.

RThanks for any pointers.

Why not just get a laptop then? £250 will sort you out without issues

Because I hate them with a vengeance: no mouse, stupid touch pad, over-sensitive right and left click, no scrolling, stupid cramped keyboards, screen too low and too small plus I'd be paying for a screen I don't need.

And yes, I know I can plug a mouse in to a laptop, but the other critcisms hold.

You could always look into this kind of set-up as well -> http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=2251&subcat=

Is the electricity clean in France? Id suggest buying a cheap used UPS (£20 max), buying a new motorcycle battery for it and running both the PC and display through this.

This way a poor electricity supply wont kill your PC. Also, theres about a 10:1 chance that its only the PSU thats failed and almost as good a chance that it hasnt taken the system board or any core components down with it.

I'm taking it into town tomorrow for a checkup, so I'll know more by the end of next week.

As for the French leccy, it's not that clean, no.

We are on the very end of an overhead three phase line, which supplies us with single phase AC.

It DOES suffer from "brown-outs", and I intend buying an ondulateur, which has battery backup, next time I go. I think it's probably that, since the laptops don't suffer the same fate.

The ondulateur is €120, though, but doers have spike protection, battery backup and spike protection for the ADSL line and phone too.

Slightly more than it would cost to have the present one repaired.

I only bought the damned thing four years ago

Maybe worth seeing if it's repairable then? Or is it cooked good and proper? My brother is good with things like this if it helps?

I guess it's too late to wipe the dodgy **** off the dead PC! Hopefully they'll be discrete.

Sometimes deals to be had on Dell Outlet http://www.dell.com/uk/dfh/p?s=dfh . Just bought an Inspiron I3 Processor, 1TB Hard Drive, 4GB RAM Windows 7 for £220 delivered. It says Scratch and Dent, but had a couple before and they have always been like new, and you get a years warranty.
