As far as I remember, No. The fibre runs from the exchange to your nearest street cabinet. From the street cabinet to your house they use the existing copper cable. But they will attend your house to install a new modem\router for you. No cabling work is needed though

No brainer if you live in one of their catchment areas, unfortunately not everyone does. FTTC (Infinity) is the next best thing for now, I'm on it through PlusNet and it's pretty good so far

For most people BT Infinity is FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet), so as mentioned above, it uses the existing copper or alloy cable coming to your house. Current maximum speeds are 40Mbps down and 10Mbps though 80Mbps / 20Mbps will soon be available (probably for extra cost).

BT do also offer FTTH/FTTP (Fibre To The Home / Premise) under the Infinity name which they claim 100Mbps for but the roll-out of that is much more limited than FTTC (only a handfull of exchanges at present).

They do, however Draytek now make a router that supports VDSL2 (as used by BT FTTC technology) so you can dispense with it after they've installed it if you wish. http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...roductID=10753

Thinking of getting one myself as I hate the fact that the stupid BT modem has no way of displaying line stats etc. so how the hell am I supposed to know if it's working well or not.

You can "unlock" the BT VDSL modem (Huawei Echolife HG612) and get full access to the stats. Details here - worked a treat for me though I did do it on a spare HG612 we had at work.

I've read of some problems with the Vigor 2750N - sounds like Draytek will fix it via firmware but might be worth waiting.

I had seen some of that stuff but was a bit worried about bricking my modem. Looks straightforward enough though so may well give it a go at some point

Thanks.

Got upgraded last week to 80/20. Sadly for me, ~750M from my Cab, it's not made the difference I was expecting. Was 36/8 now 52/10 (on a good test). I was expecting the upload to increase more. PlusNet haven't announced pricing so I'll probably drop it after the trial is over unless it really is only pennies more.

I believe next year BT will be trialling Fibre on Demand, or whatever they call it, where anyone will be able to get a quote for a fibre installation to the property. Don't expect this to be cheap though!

Don't you have to live close to the exchange to get FTTP? I thought it was for houses with no cabinets.

I was accepted onto PlusNet's 80/20 trial today. Order should be processed within a day. It will be interesting to see what difference it makes, but I'll expect the worse case and hope for the best.

I'm on the standard 40/2 with PlusNet and I really want a big upload increase, which is what I should get. Any increase in DL is a bonus and 40mb is plenty tbh.

Just had mine activated (sometime since 12 midnight) and I'm pretty damn chuffed so far on inital tests.

Before on 40/2
BT Profile was around 38Mb/1.7Mb
Speedtest.net was around 38Mb/1.7Mb

Now on 80/20
BT Profile is @ 72.2Mb/20Mb
