Hint: The really clever thing about batteries is that you can replace them - no really, you can actually replace them (with new ones or even "rechargeable" ones)!

use normal in my laptop mouse and still going strong 6 months later and I forget and leave it on all the time. Some have powersave modes others don't.
My Logitech MX1000 laser is still on its original battery after about 4 years, but it is a rechargeable

Buy a set of rechargeable 2800 rated batteries, they will last longer than any duracell etc. then recharge them overnight when they die, ready to go the next day for months again.
My MS 5000 mouse is on its second set of normal batteries, just over a year old now though I do put the usb dongle back in place to knock the power off at night.

Depends on teh mouse:
I have three A4tech R7 running on some manky rechargable AAAs and they last for months at least 2-3months, and thats with daily use. I'd probably get longer if I used some decent Hybrio batteries. (they are currently useing 750mAh NiMH Panasonic batteries out of a set of old cordless phones )
I also have a Trust which runs on a AA alkaline, which if switched off (this has a manual switch underneath, the A4tech is automatic) it will also last a few months.
In comparison I have three mini/travel mice for the laptops; two from Gizoo, another is branded by Vivanco. They all take two AAAs and they are all shyte. I'll get a week max out of gizoo ones even when apparrantly 'off' and unused! I have to take the batteries out if not in use to make them last any longer.
ps. Do not buy the biggest mAh cells for the longest runs times, as they will self-dischage when used with low current devices like mice. Non-discharging Ni-MH cells, like Uniross Hybrio/multi usage will last longer, even if they have a lower capacity. pps. ALWAYS use a delta peak/peak detect battery charger (unless the mouse has its own), as any other type of charger will ruin NiMH cell's ability to hold and store a full charge.

I have a Razer Orochi and that's lasted over a year.
Not bad for a gaming mouse
I should add, I use it in work everyday and that's a minimum of 7 hours use.

I've always found that the Microsoft keyboards / mice have the best battery life. 18 months - 2 years out of the keyboard (daily use for 2-3 hours) and 6-9 months from the mouse
