What are ISO files and how do I use one?

Sorry to ask a dumb question here folks, especially as I work in IT, but I have never used the ISO format before and have just downloaded my first one and now have little idea what to do with it. I sort of guessed I am supposed to burn the image straight onto cd but haven't tried it yet and wanted to check first. Also if this is the case do I need to select any particular options when burning to say its an iso file. Will be using Nero. Is there anyway to use the file without burning onto cd? I have probably got it all wrong so could someone please put me out of my misery and point me in the right direction.
Cheers

Bob,
From what i understand.... yes you are right an iso file is a cd image file and must be burnt to cd - i don't think there are any easy ways to use the file direct. If you are using nero, it should recognise this file format - there is the option to create new cd using image file..... and then once selected you are away
hope this helps

Bob,
You can download plenty of utilities which allow you to extract ISO image files. I use ISO Buster

OK next question, DOH! Also got some bin/cue files to burn and have read that these are more complicated, something to do with needing to edit the cue file. Err how the ell does this work then? And am I also going to have to use overburn as one of them is 714mb? Was well pleased they downloaded, not so pleased with the hassle required to get them working
Any answers on a post card please! Any help given will be much appreciated!

bin/cue files are similar to ISO except they are generate by another CD Writing software (NERO Burning Rom - from memory) and its "not" a standard file format. If you have a bin&cue file then you can use "said" software to burn the image of the CD onto a CDR and thereby restoring all the files from the original CD - if this makes sense, its late and i'm not very coherent at the mo..

There are also some utils to convert .bin and .cue 's to .iso
Makes it all a little simpler.
I have one knocking about somewhere if you want it . 1.2mb as I recall.

Cue files are just text files which tells the software the track mode, start/stop times etc.
Bin (binary) files can also be manipulated using ISOBuster
You can extract one or all of the files you want from it.

Cheers DJ, so does that mean I should be able to burn the cue and bin files straight onto a cd with something like nero and not worry about editing the file, only got the editing thing off a forum that said something about it but wasn't too clear!

Cue/Bin files are recognised by a CD Writing app called CDRWin.You can download a trial version from http://www.goldenhawk.com and if you know your stuff, get a crack for it elsewhere(Hmmmm Hmmmm )
It sounds very much like you've downloaded a game or piece of software off the web to me!!!!!!
Good luck

You shouldn't have to edit the cue file if it was the original one that was created for the bin using CDRWin. If its just one Mode2 or Mode1 data track then the file is pretty standard. Haven't got one here but can send you one from home.
If you are unsure, what I normally do is (provided there are no audio tracks), use ISO Buster to extract all of the files from the Bin or ISO file to a new folder then burn the files using your chosen software.
Works a treat

Hi
Got to HTTP://WWW.DAEMON-TOOLS.COM/ and download the version 3 of dameon tools, instal and you have a vitual CD drive which us can mount any ISO files on. It's just like having up to 4 extra CD drives. I have it installed on all our network PC's on a rig so people can see training CD's etc. Works under W2K/NT/98/95 (Not sure about XP)

that piece of software is amazing! It has allowed me to install iso and bin/cue files without doing anything to them and with no cd fixes applied job done! Cheers for that as you have saved me a lot of time and hassle!
Everyone else check it out as it really is a fantastic bit of software, allows you to create upto 4 virtual cd drives where you tell each drive what file to load, hence opens the image files as if they were on a cd!!!!
Everone else thanks for the advice and links, I am gonna try that p2p filesharing software mentioned, the one I currently use above all others is edonkey. Steve thanks for trying to send me that file but like you said Hotmail hasn't accepted it as I haven't received it. I would still like to have a copy at some stage if possible, I will clear out my other hotmail address and let you know.
Cheers
