New Mac Freezing up :-(
Really enjoying the new Mac and going back to Windows laptops now feels strange - but I've been disappointed to find the Macbook Air freezing at least 5 times this week and only a power on/off will work. Of course, it starts up again so quickly and most work is saved automatically that it's not a big loss - just disappointing that it happens at all - I can't remember Windows 7 freezing on me even once.
Can't track down what has caused it - can happen at any time and in any app - and don't recall install anything that has triggered it. Might try going back to an old timemachine backup as it's only just started to happen this week (well, also did when I installed DropBox, but that seems to be a known issue and it was resolved when I uninstalled that).
Again, just surprised that the whole system freezes/crashes. Didn't expect that on the mac after all the stories about how robust the OS is supposed to be.
Any tips from the long term Mac users on how to track down what has caused the crash? Any log files dumped out anywhere?
Cheers
Richard.

Hi Richard
This freezing occurred when you are using iTunes?
If yes you will need patch download via Software Update or Apple website.
This can help too

What Mac do you have?
What OS X version are you running?
When this happens can you still move the mouse pointer around, also, do you see a little beach-ball like icon?
When it happens again, hold down command (Apple key) Option (alt key) and the Escape keys at the same time, it should display a Force Quit dialog.
The item that is initially highlighted will be the current app you are in. You could try hitting "Force Quit" and seeing if that then fixes things. Additionally, look and see if there is anything listed as "Not responding" and note down what it is and then kill it and see if that helps.
Also. hit the Go menu and then select "Go To Folder" and enter "/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/" and press Go. Sort the list by date and see if you can find a crash log from the last time the machine hung. This could indicate which app it was that is causing issues.
What third-party applications do you have installed? What apps were you running at the time of the freeze?
Did you happen to have Safari running and if so, did you happen to be on a site that uses a lot of flash? It's possible this might be maxing out the processor in the background (if you're in another app) and this would result in things being very slow.
You could also have a read of this which details how to use Apple Hardware Test. Might be worth seeing if the machine is ok. If it fails, give Apple a ring and they should replace the machine under warranty as it's new.

2011 Macbook Air running 10.7.1.
When it freezes then the mouse pointer just stops moving and no response from the system - spinning beachball isn't there. Had it happen when browsing sites, general desktop stuff plus a couple times when in the middle of writing an email in Mail.
I'm pretty sure all the apps I'm running are Lion compatible.
Thanks for the various tips - The CrashReport folder only had an entry in it for the Migration tool - which I had quit out off when I first got the mac and tried to transfer my files over from my PC. Re Safari, last crash only had the BBC news site open. App wise in the background I'm running Caffeine, Alfred and Fantastical (being an old Windows user then I still tend to Quit the apps I'm not using and don't leave them open).
Hardware test came up clean - so I'll strip out all the background apps and see how this week goes.
Loving the machine though - everything is so quick and MailHub (allows easy filing of email into folder) and Fantastical are two of the best productivity apps I think I've ever used.
Cheers
Richard.

I also have a new Mac Air and have had no issues at all. You MAY be trying to run something that is not compatible with LION. Not all apps are comfortable with it as it still relatively new.
I love the Air even more than the Pro - I think the ideal machine would be an i7 Air with 500Gb SSD and a touch screen a la iPad.
