Default PS3 Laser.

Hi guys. I was given a PS3 from my brother. it's a Fat 80gb. The laser is fooked on it. Well, the whole CD drive is fooked. It won't take a CD when you try and put one in it!

Where can I get a whole CD drive unit from? And is it a straight forward swap?

Cheers.

Not as simple as a straight swap I'm afraid. You will have to find at what drive you have and if it's the single/dual laser jobby. If you cannot find a replacement drive cost effectively you can replace the laser for around £30-£50 .

Whatever you do make sure you have the original logic board or else all you have is a media centre/door stop.

Good info above, the drive will be married to the ps3 so a straight swap is unlikey.

The drive I have is off one of the 60gb launch models, so if the ps3 you have is an old model you would be able to swap over parts from my drive onto yours (providing you don't swap the logic boards).

Its likely someone botched a repair, hence it not taking a disc at all.
A faulty laser will take the disc, but keep spinning it without reading.
Take it apart and use an online guide. You should be able to see why its not taking the disc. Then work out if it needs a new laser or not.

When it went **** up for my brother, it would take a CD but it would keep spinning and spinning and that's it. He could play the games that was on his HDD no problem.

But he took the laser apart to have a look, since then it won't take a CD

He's not put it back properly, there are some awkward springs and catches that need to be set right, other wise it still thinks a disc is in there, so wont let you put a new one in.
I done it on mine a few times, but by the end, I could take apart a ps3 in a few minutes.

As for the logic board, if you just get a new laser, and set the drive properly, you wont have to worry about that. But, if you get a whole new drive, it must come with the logic board from the PS3 it came from.

I take it the logic board is the little circuit board that the ribbons from the laser is attached to?

There must be bits missing from the CD drive, as I can put a CD in it like there's nothing stopping me, but the drive doesn't pull the CD in like it should if you know what I mean.

I would phone my brother and call him a ******, but, I can't complain as I got it for free
