PS3 reliability?
Just read this (from the TGS)...
It appears that the ps3 only has 1 fan (the 360 has two), and the power supply is built into the console itself, generating even more heat. So, the console is generating more heat and has less cooling than the 360.
Doesn't sound promising. I think I may leave getting one until late next year (once any hardware problem have been exposed / fixed).
In a report released yesterday, Macquarie Equities analyst David Gibson stated that PS3 units had to be reset frequently at this year's Tokyo Game Show, pointing the finger at overheating.
Sony, of course, has denied hardware issues with PS3 exist, with company spokesperson Nanako Kato saying the TGS phenomenon was likely caused by one-of-a-kind temperature irregularities.
"It's not a problem with the PlayStation 3 unit itself," Kato maintained. "For a normal player at home, there shouldn't be any problem."

The problem is they are pushing faster processors gpu's etc and trying to keep them small as possible and trying to keep them quite for the moaning public, they will get hot it's no different with laptops.
The good news for the 360 is (asumming you've not already bought one ) is :-

Murmurs from the more technical corners of the internet suggest Microsoft's about to switch to new processors for the Xbox 360, running cooler to make the machine much more reliable.
The new chips will use a 65nm process to run more efficiently than the console's current 90nm chips.
According to the tech-heads at VNUnet, Microsoft will make the change in the first few months of next year, instantly reducing the temperature inside the Xbox and cutting down the amount of overheating issues experienced by gamers.
Chartered Semiconductor will be responsible for the new chips, and although they're not as advanced as 40nm models in the pipeline from Intel and AMD, they'll still make a big difference.

Why?
Just because he said that the machines were overheating, why does that makes him a Microsoft fanboy? Sounds like a typical Apple fanboy comment to me
They could be pre-production machines, but I doubt it. Surely they'd be showing the final article seeing as the release date is only a few weeks away in Japan...

They were blaming the cases they were in - little to no ventilation to the PS3's was causing the failures.
At least they were actually PS3's - the same cant be said for the 360 last year, when what you were actually playing on was an Apple Mac hidden underneath...

In all fairness, its only part of the quote. Here it is a little more in context:
"About 200 PlayStation 3 units were clustered together in close proximity and housed in kiosks that concentrated the heat generated by their processors and provided poor ventilation ... Overheating under such circumstances is a common affliction at trade shows, afflicting not just Sony products but those of its competitors ... [a Sony spokeswomen continued] 'For a normal player at home, there shouldn't be any problem.'"

Yes, I've just seen that. So as long as you sit the machine in a nice well ventillated area it will be ok. Sound like exactly the same things they said about the 360. So basically you can forget using it as a dvd player and sticking it under your telly then.
Interesting that the Sony share price has just dropped again after this story was released. I wonder if it's related?
p.s. the 360 demo uints did used to run on macs, but that was some time before the release. By the time it got to the TGS, they had the actual machines running. It is only a few weeks until the global (except europe) launch, so I would hope they would have some finished machines by now...

Fine. Not had time to play with it much in the last few weeks (too much proper work to do, and I've been trying to get the gamerscore up on the 360). Still addicted to the megadrive emulator and Gods though
