Default Recommend a good external cd/dvd writer.

I`m after a good external dvd/cd writer that plays both CD and DVD and also writes both, any recommendations ?

Its for someone i know that needs a stop gap as their optical drive has just packed up on their desktop and they will be replacing it soon with a new system so its not worth replacing the optical drive itself, the external one will come in handy anyway.

Currently own a Samsung slimline external drive which has 2 x USB lead for providing power. Also good for writing on all DVD and CD standards.

Amazon have a few good ones for sale:

He prefered the LG over the Samsung ones as its mains powered, the Samsung are USB powered which ive read can sometimes lead to problems during writing due to them being USB powered, also i don`t think you can load an OS from the Samsung USB powered ones, just something i read on reviews.

Had no problems with mine, even installed Windows 7 onto my Asus EEE PC901 with it, as long as you have the 2 x USB cables (1 x Power/Data , 1 x Extra Power) it works fine. Even burnt a music CD today using Nero software. Nice nad handy to carry around if wanted without another Powersupply :-)
