Default Wireless keyboards

I foolishly bought a wireless keyboard and mouse in a hurry before Xmas only to find that it has a range of about five feet. I need a range of about 25 feet (big room, big screen).
I've had a look around and can see some that claim a long range but what is the difference between these and the short range ones? How do they work? What should I look out for?
Do the batteries flatten really quickly? Do they power off on their own or will my button pushing kids leave them on and flatten them daily?

......oh and is it possible to operate joysticks/steering wheels wirelessly?

Try some better batteries first ?

They have a sleep mode and pushing a key "wakes" them up, mine is a keysonic and it's fine.

This is of no help, but my old, cheap Logitech keyboard and mouse from Argos works 10 meters or so, it literally works through brick walls, no joke, the mouse doesn't mind, no idea why though.
