How do I reduce a file size?
Hi, I am doing some mail shots at the moment and one of the attachments I want to send is a promotional postcard with product picture on one side and words on the reverse. I have this as a .pdf file but it is 7.5 mb. This is a bit too large to send so how can I reduce the file size to make it more friendly? Cheers, David

David,
If you print the PDF to a PDF file (rather than a physical printer), you should then have options on file size, dpi etc.
Hope that makes sense.
Cheers

Yep I sort of understand that. The file was already in my Adobe file which I then opened and right clicked. There were all sorts of options, most of which I don't understand, but I didn't see anything obvious to reduce size. I'll keep trying. But thanks chaps. David

David, if you want to email me the file if it's Ok to d so I can try reduce it in Adobe Acrobat for you. if you make it compatible with only the latest reader that helps reduce the size.

David, emailed you back a couple versions. Seems due to the way the page was created either from a scanned image or a hi res bitmap thus creating the 7 meg file. Running the optimiser in Acrobat has reduced it to about 0.5meg. Hopefully it's still of good enough quality for your use.

I think it will be fine now so big thanks for that. Is 0.5 mb acceptable as a file size for mailing in protocol terms? I don't want to upset recipients.
I don't know how page was created except that it was sent by the printers who printed off a couple of thousand of the cards. Cheers, David

Back to the zipping. Even if the file could not be compressed in one go, you can set a limit on a zip file and winzip will easily go off and split this into manageable files that you can then e-mail off in a series to the recipient, all they do is then unzip the first one and the others will be un-zipped as well to bring back the file. Simples!

jpor,
I suspect that "zipping" would be worthless in this instance as the file would already be in a compressed format. This tends to drastically reduce the effect of further compression.
David,
500k file size is miniscule in the grand scheme of things. I would be very surprised if this caused anyones email system a problem. You will be good to go!

and not many people are going to be opening a .zip file in an email.........
I would have thought anything up to 1 meg is ok for emailing, I get annoyed when people email me 5 photos through that are 5mb each!

Okay but you could still use the split file process in winzip to break this down in to smaller files to be e-mailed. It was/is an option
