Default How do I reduce a file size?

Hi, I am doing some mail shots at the moment and one of the attachments I want to send is a promotional postcard with product picture on one side and words on the reverse. I have this as a .pdf file but it is 7.5 mb. This is a bit too large to send so how can I reduce the file size to make it more friendly? Cheers, David

Don't you have various "quality" options when you save the PDF? It has been some time since I have used a PDF writer.

Not that I can find. File was sent to me by printers and if I open it and save it again I don't see any options available. I either save it or I don't

David

You should be able to reduce the resolution when printing the PDF?

Thanks Steve but how will this help me reduce file size for e-mailing to people? Perhaps I am being thick - treat me gently

David,

If you print the PDF to a PDF file (rather than a physical printer), you should then have options on file size, dpi etc.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers

Yep I sort of understand that. The file was already in my Adobe file which I then opened and right clicked. There were all sorts of options, most of which I don't understand, but I didn't see anything obvious to reduce size. I'll keep trying. But thanks chaps. David

David, if you want to email me the file if it's Ok to d so I can try reduce it in Adobe Acrobat for you. if you make it compatible with only the latest reader that helps reduce the size.

Silly question but can't you compress it into a .zip file, send it, and un-zip it at the other end. Or do PDF files not compress well ??

David, emailed you back a couple versions. Seems due to the way the page was created either from a scanned image or a hi res bitmap thus creating the 7 meg file. Running the optimiser in Acrobat has reduced it to about 0.5meg. Hopefully it's still of good enough quality for your use.

I think it will be fine now so big thanks for that. Is 0.5 mb acceptable as a file size for mailing in protocol terms? I don't want to upset recipients.

I don't know how page was created except that it was sent by the printers who printed off a couple of thousand of the cards. Cheers, David

First answer that came into my head also. Then also thought about Rar as well, but the recipient of the mail would also need an un-raring utillity to uncompress the file.

Back to the zipping. Even if the file could not be compressed in one go, you can set a limit on a zip file and winzip will easily go off and split this into manageable files that you can then e-mail off in a series to the recipient, all they do is then unzip the first one and the others will be un-zipped as well to bring back the file. Simples!

jpor,
I suspect that "zipping" would be worthless in this instance as the file would already be in a compressed format. This tends to drastically reduce the effect of further compression.

David,
500k file size is miniscule in the grand scheme of things. I would be very surprised if this caused anyones email system a problem. You will be good to go!

and not many people are going to be opening a .zip file in an email.........

I would have thought anything up to 1 meg is ok for emailing, I get annoyed when people email me 5 photos through that are 5mb each!

Okay but you could still use the split file process in winzip to break this down in to smaller files to be e-mailed. It was/is an option
