Default Problem installing a new harddrive-help needed?

Having just bought a new machine which has only got 1 sata hard drive, i tried to install my old ide hard drive into it as far as i know it is set to master but loads of different jumper settings on back , saying not just master but other things.Plugged ide cable into ide slot on the computer plus power supply lead in, bios is set to auto detect hard drive, but when turn on computer it does not recognise hard rive in there, does anyone know why.

Is it ok to call this one a master hard drive even though i still have another hard drive in there as that one is a sata drive.
Can anyone help me further.

Id whip the jumper off completely and run it as a slave, the dvd burner is normally a master,
Does it see ur old HDD in Bios?

Hi I recently built a new pc with an asus board and had the same problem.
I eventually got the bios to recognise the Ide drive but had problems installing Windows 7!
Got that sorted then every time I tried to boot the PC it would just hang on the Windows 7 start up screen.
I decided to remove the IDE drive and the PC works great.
For some reason Asus boards don't like Sata and Ide Hard drives connected at the same time.
All I can suggest is flashing your bios if there is a newer version and see if that eliminates the problem.

Asus p5ql pro here with sata main drive

Unable to get ide drive working, no matter what i set to the jumpers to, my work around was to remove the dvd drive and then it would work.

I was only using the ide drive to transfer stuff over so it was no big deal.

Some IDE cables have a master and a slave connector, in different colours... a slave in a master will never work (?)

Just a thought.

dunx

P.S. Is it listed in the hard drive section of the BIOS ?

Same cables as the old build, where they both had 2 devices on them without any issue, real strange problem, i suspect the mobo just has a few niggles.
