See that flat red cable ?
Find the point where it plugs into the motherboard, if you have a spare socket next to it, then plug in another SATA cable just the same.
Fit the new hard drive under your old one, plug in the SATA cable, plug in the spare power cable i see floating about, and try turning your pc on

And any hard drive will fit?
I've seen some very cheap second hand units on EBlag, could I use one of those or would the hard drive need to be a brand new unit with it own software?
Are the connections all the same accross all brands?

It doesn't need to be brand new, you could use a 2nd hand one, but given how little drives cost, it's probably worth a new one for piece of mind. You won't need any software for it.
As StickMicky said, assuming you have a free SATA port, you need a SATA drive and cable... as opposed to PATA/IDE, which is the older kind of drive (there are others, but you don't really see them in home computers).

If it is a BRAND NEW drive it may not be as easy as JUST plugging it in and switching it on. You may have to mount and format the drive as well. Whilst this is straight forward if you know, it may not be if you do not know how to do it.

You mean to mount it into position inside the case? I can do that if that's what you mean.
How would I format the drive? Obviously I don't want to format the existing hard drive at the same time..
