Default PC, made some progress, need some advice pls.

Ok, PC was not working, started, no display then stopped, waited 2 secs and started again still with no output.

Changed the PSU when I realised i had been running it with a 300W, it had 2 HD's, 2 Optical, Dual Core CPU (6750) and without thinking much about it last year I upgraded the video card to an 8800GT and it ran fine until the above started happening.

Bough a 650 Watt one and put it back together, wont run with the 8800 GT, same problem but will run on the onboard VGA and a PCI-E Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 borrowed from work, so the slot is ok as is everything else so I reckon I have buggered my 8800 GT (Inno 3d Overclock).

Personally I dont do much PC gaming, the kids use it a bit for Garys Mod and Left for Dead 2 but are more into the consoles, but still I have to give the Quadro back and its only 2d anyway and I want the option so what should I get next to replace that will play the games mentioned ok, dont run at high resolutions as its only a 19 inch monitor and I am not after ultimate performance or future proofing as the PC is 2 or 3 years old and will get replaced fairly soon anyway but cant afford to buy one just yet.

So, after a solid performer, preferably not something overclocked or that needs 3 slots and industrial cooling !

Is the 8800GT powered by the PCIE Power connectors on the back of the card?

Try the gxf on a different PC.

Undervolting a card that you have done shouldn't hurt it unless it spiked when the PSU gave out.

Pick up another 8800gt on the cheap from something like fleabay ?

Thing is, speccing up PC`s is a nightmare, current games seam to be moving towards quad cores processors now, if you are not playing to many games then maybe just replace what is broken, you could get a new killer GFX card and find your CPU is holding it back.

My GTX275 seams to be handling most things easy enough at the moment, the only game i have trouble with is ARMA 2 but that is more dependant on the CPU then the graphics cardm the GTX275 needs two power supplys fed into it, so your "new" psu might not be enough!

4850 & 4870's can be had for good money. I personally run a 4870 - but this may be overkill for your needs.

Most games (95%) don't currently support multicore processing - only the OS does. Dual core if fine

Batman (as far as i remember)
ARMA 2
are 2 current games that i recall wanting quads?

In fact ARMA 2 recommends it!

When you see the minimum specs listed as a dual core, and the recommended specs listed as a quad, it makes you think where these games are going in the future..

Will be interesting to see what the new crysis game asks for.
I know the source engine games now seam to have multicore options in them.

I had a 8800GT which also failed recently, only 1.5yrs old. Might be a bad batch of cards.

Got the 8800GT tested at work and it was fine !

PC was otherwise ok, would run onboard graphics and with the borrowed one. Didnt want to order one online so went to the local computer shop, very helpful but I ended up paying ninety quid for am Asus 1GB 9600GT which I dont think is as good as the one I took out and overpriced but it meant that its back up and running and will play games and next time I will go for somethign a bit better, i.e. when I get a new pc, but now a I have a spare working-ish 8800GT.

Yea a 9600GT is not as good as an 8800GT unfortunately, but if it works that's the main thing. I did the samething n bought a 1gig 9800GT. I am not a gamer so I just needed a direct replacement.
