what leads
my laptop and tv have vga connections, have connected these and a mini jack, can get picture but no sound through the tv, only sound comes from the laptop

When you plug the mini jack lead in to the laptop, does the sound coming out of the laptop stop? It generally should do if you've plugged it correctly in the headphone socket.
If it does stop, then check your menu on the tv to see if you need to enable the sound in input.
