Default How close is Windows 7 Build 7600 to the release 'you can buy it' version?

Build 7600 is on the networks and Engadget.com too.

Is this the version likely to go out the door in a plastic retail box?

Dunk

I'm fairly sure there's no early £50 upgrade for Ultimate.

Mmmm ... no Windows Mail apparently. That is annoying.

Having just run the advisor I get: "You can do an in-place upgrade to 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate".

You do know that's the 'E' version - you'll probably be the first person in Europe to use our trimmed down version

Yep, exactly the same otherwise. Can't really see any reason not to since you could install it afterwards anyway if you really wanted.

Working to Fulfill our Legal Obligations in Europe for Windows 7 - Microsoft On The Issues

"What does this mean for European consumers? The E versions of Windows 7 will include all the features and functionality of Windows 7 in the rest of the world, other than browsing with Internet Explorer. Computer manufacturers will be able to add any browser they want to their Windows 7 machines, including Internet Explorer, so European consumers who purchase new PCs will be able to access the Internet without any problem. Consumers will also be able to add any Web browser to their PCs, to supplement or replace the browsers preinstalled by their computer manufacturer. "

It's the full monty When you install the E edition of Windows 7, you'll need to do a clean installation anyway. There is no EU upgrade version.

Edit: as I understand it anyway Anyone care to confirm?

The E version is clean disk install only, no upgrade path is currently available for Europe.

It was a common misconception that it's an upgrade version because that it what the Americans are getting.

£49.99 is a no brainer IMO

NAF - the term 'upgrade' is purely talked of in licensing terms, not installation.

For example, if you have Vista Ultimate and you purchase an upgrade licence for Windows 7 you don't have to do an in place upgrade - you can still wipe and start with a clean installation.

So I wouldn't need say to install first an activated copy of vista then win7 on top of it if I had a system with no OS on it?

If I rememebr correctly, when you purchase an upgrade licence you need to provide the product key of your current OS

Well according to the pre-order FAQ:

How do I know if I am eligible for this offer?

To be eligible for the offer, you need to be running a genuine copy of the Windows XP or Windows Vista operating systems.

Not sure whether this means you will need to provide an XP or Vista code to install. May be an issue for some dodgy users
