Default Any BT Broadband Users Here?

If you get BT broadband, do you have to use the home hub they send you, or can you use any router?

I was with Orange and have a Netgear router at the moment which is all set up. So will that just start working with BT broadband?

Cheers, Alan

You actually need to use another router 50% of the time as the home hubs are gash

Edited for accuracy, mind you I haven't used the newer ones. Older ones were so bad they could kill you

That's what I thought! My Aunt asked me to set up her broadband and the first hub didn't even work.

Mine is coming tomorrow and I think the changeover is meant to be midnight, but I'll not bother doing anything now if it will just be working the way it is. I'll just leave the Netgear set up.

This might sound like an even dafter question, but do I need to install the BT software they sent? Surely if I just keep everything the way it is I won't need it?

My Aunt needs to enter a username and password to use the internet so would rather just keep things the way they are.

My parents have a home hub, it's terrible but then I wouldn't use BT at all for Internet or TV

If you keep the Netgear router just change the username and password on the router and you should be fine

Draytek 2800 here as well. Used BT broadband for the past 7-8years before they were giving home hubs away for free Used a few 3rd party routers on BT without any issues. When using a 3rd party router you have to make sure you have the correct settings as to get a connection, unless newer routers have some form of plug and play these days
