Default Work Internet Speed

I've noticed my Internet speed has greatly reduced over the past few months and the IT Department don't seem to think there is anything wrong.

Work for a NHS Trust so plenty of people using the network at lunchtimes, however it's pretty slow during most of the day.

Just tried to watch something on iplayer and it wouldn't let me, even on the low bandwidth version (something I've managed to do easily in the past)

Just been onto 'Speedtest.net' and the test is still going, 5 minutes after I started it... - Highest it got was 0.5Mb .

Likely problem or tough sh*t?

It's probably people abusing the company internet, using IPlayer and speedtest sites

I'm suprised that an NHS trust even allows access to the iplayer let alone speedtest sites.

You are really in the hands of your IT team on this one. As unhelpful as it sounds there is little you can do as you probally won't have access to do it. Is the net just as slow on other peoples desk?

Maybe they are throttling you alone.

I work for the NHS and they have blocked most sites that don't have anything to do with work...youtube, i-player, e-bay, the list is endless LOL

If you look at the blurb when you log on and at your contract of employment you might be skating on thin ice using an NHS computer for personal use.....

Try checking with the head of HR

I think you'll find that is standard practice now, certainly in mid to large companies anyway.

We have a web usage policy which all employees must sign, usage is monitored using WebTrends, Websense etc

Surely if you want to watch something on iPlayer, YouTube etc - do it at home in your own time.

People who argue "but it's in my lunch hour" - yes but it's still taking up valuable bandwidth which your company is paying for.

I require decent internet during the day for work purposes, which can be difficult with slow speeds.

Tested early this morning before most people are in and was getting speeds upwards of 10 and even 45 at one point so surely must be getting throttled at lunch..

As for blocking sites, it depends who you work for...

If the connection speed is stopping you from performing your required duties then you should document this and send it to your IT team / management.

Lunchtime internet usage peaks in every company and it's only natural this will slow down the connection, especially if people are on YouTube / iPlayer etc
